Sustained Investigation #4

He's Lucky

Scratchboard

For this Sustained Investigation, I wanted to use scratchboard as my material, as it is one of my favorite mediums to use. I had to choose a high-quality subject with lots of contrast, which I found in a personal photo reference of my cat, Lucky. My main focus, because of my material, was light, contrast, depth, and realism.

To create this project, I used a printed photo reference, graphite pencils, scratchboard tools, and a piece of scratchboard.

I started by choosing my reference photo, which was of my cat, Lucky. I chose it because of its good angle, high quality, and contrast. Then, I printed the image and went over the back with a layer of graphite pencil. I then used the graphite to transfer a traced outline of my printed image on the piece of scratchboard. Using this as a basic guideline, I scraped away at the scratchboard to create the image above.
