Duck Stamp

Flying Bufflehead

9" x11"

Mixed Media Paper, Colored Pencils

Artist Statement:

We were instructed to research a species of duck, and scientifically render them on a 9" x 12" piece of paper. I chose the species of the Bufflehead because I Iiked the different light and colors on their heads and necks. I also like the wetland environment that they typically live in, which is wetlands, the coast, or a woody area.

The materials I used for this consisted of graphite pencils, and colored pencils (primarily white). I used these on a piece of mixed media paper.

Using a few different sources, I tried to copy an image of a flying Bufflehead. I started with the bird itself, making simple, basic shapes in graphite pencil. Then, I slowly added the colored pencil, trying to use color and light in a scientific way. Finally, I worked on the background, trying to use light and color in the same way.
