The Snake, the Elf, and the Tree

9" x 11"

Bristol Paper, Fine Tip Sharpie, Graphite Pencil, Brush Markers

Artist Statement:

For this assignment, I was supposed to "draw an antsy snake chasing a hungry elf climbing up a palm tree." I'm not exactly sure why I chose this particular prompt, but it was one that I pictured the best in my head. I knew I wanted fairly neutral colors (if I used colors at all), and I wanted to use ink pens or markers. These are both elements I incorporated into my artwork.

For this piece, I drew on a 9" x 11" piece of Bristol board paper. I used graphite pencils to sketch out my design and went over the sketch in Sharpie. I then shaded the whole thing using some BLICK brush markers.

I started by sketching out vague shapes with some light graphite pencils. After I had defined and revised some real shapes, I went over everything with a fine-tipped Sharpie pen. After I did this, I added some clouds in the background, because it felt pretty bare. I went over certain areas with BLICK brush markers, adding some shade and contrast to my piece, and giving it more depth. Finally, I added my prompt and signature.
