Watercolor and Sharpie on bristol board paper.

Artist Statement:

For this assignment, we had to create a call-to-action message about organ and tissue donation for Donate Life. I chose the slogan "Lives are Invaluable, Gift one today." This was the inspiration for the subject, which is one person giving a heart gift to someone else. I chose light blue and light green colors for the hands, which connects to the colors of the Donate Life logo.

For this project, I used watercolor and Sharpie marker on bristol board paper. I wanted the colors to be vibrant but soft in appearance, which is why I chose watercolor. I used Sharpie to refine the edges and details, although I need to go over the lettering because the background became darker than intended.

First, I came up with the slogan above. Then, I had to sketch out my design and edit it until all of the details fit together in the frame. I had to do a lot of editing of my hands, as those were kind of difficult to make realistic. After all the details were settled, I finalized them with a Sharpie marker. I found my use of watercolor paint to color my design satisfactory, but also a little frustrating as the colors tended to blend and the purple paint dried much darker than I would have liked.
