Mapping Design

Artist Statement:
For this project, we were instructed to create a map of our life, be it our whole life or our path in a single day, and incorporate it into a piece of artwork. I chose a day where I wake up at my dad's house, go to school, babysit, and then end up at my dad's house again. The way I found the map or the path of a day like this was with the Life360 app. I went into my location history, and it had laid out a map like the one above. I decided to use this path in my map.
I used embroidery for this project, a medium I chose because I was curious about it and I wanted to see if it was something I was interested in. It turns out, it is very hard to work with this medium for me because it works very slowly. I don't think I'll stick with it but it was worth a shot. The materials I used were the embroidery hoop, cloth, thread, and needles.
I started by figuring out what my map or path would look like. After I had done that (using Life360), I created a sketch of the map as featured above. Then, I set up my embroidery hoop. The first thing I stitched was the circular outline around the whole thing, as I hoped it would sort of frame it. Then, I stitched in the black lines for the map. After I had done that, I stitched out the words, and finally, I added the trees and river. The river is not a depiction of any real river, I did make this element up.
