Artist Statement:

For our last piece of art this year, we were supposed to create something with our favorite medium. We could choose any materials or techniques that we had used during the last year; those that we enjoyed most and which yielded the best results. Looking back, I liked the Scratchboard unit a lot. I had previously done my cat, lucky, and a moose, both of which were successful. I wanted to chose and animal, and one that meant something to me, so I chose my dog.

I did not use many materials for this project. I only used a 8.5" x 11" piece of scratchboard paper, a fiber brush tool, a line tool, and a scratching tool.

To start, I found a high-quality image of my dog, cropped it to the preferred dimensions, and printed it in black and white. I then went over the back of the printed picture with a 6B pencil, so that I could transfer it to the scratchboard paper. I placed the picture over the scratchboard paper, and traced certain forms to fill in, and it transferred. Finally, I spent a while observing the picture, paying attention to light, and then scratching away.
