Sgraffito

Artist Statement:

I decided for my tile to do a landscape that connects to where I live, which is Maine. I made a lake scene, with pine trees, and one more prominent pine tree with a star to the left to represent the old Maine flag. I also did some constellations in the sky to connect to nature, and finally, I did a loon, which is a bird native to Maine.

To create this work, I used a slab of clay, and some black glaze.

To create this piece, I cut out a circular slab of clay and set it out to dry for a week. After this, I added a few layers of clay glaze. Next, I carved out the design using various tools, and finally, the clay went into the kiln to be fired.
