The Manta Ray
Colored Pencil, marker
6" x 9"
Artist Statement:
For this piece of art, I was given a piece of watercolor paper with an ink blotch on it. This blotch seemed like it could turn into some sort of sea creature to me, and for whatever reason, I made it into a manta ray. I chose a bottom perspective because I thought it would be the most interesting.
In this project I used a bit of graphite pencil, some fine-tipped markers, but mostly colored pencils. Of course, the blotch that was given to me was made of India ink.
After receiving my inked paper, I began to look at pictures of manta rays and began to sketch with a graphite pencil. After I had done this, I went over the manta ray design with markers. Then, I added remora fish onto the manta ray, and finally, I colored everything in with colored pencils.
