Very Much Your Beeswax

Watercolor on watercolor paper

Artist Statement:

For this project, we needed to create a piece of work that in some way spoke to climate change. Originally, I had planned on doing something cliché with a polar bear, but I changed my idea to bees. Climate change negatively affects them, as they are not able to live in extreme temperatures that climate change brings. To show this, my subject was a bee on a frozen indigo flower

For this project, my primary material was watercolor, which I thought would look soft and colorful. I also used some fine-tipped sharpie for some sharp details. Finally, I used a blue-gray colored pencil for the icicles.

I began by creating a sketch of my work using reference photos. After I did this, I translated a similar sketch on the paper I would use for the final draft and suffused it with watercolor. Then, I added some details with Sharpie and the icicles with colored pencil. After the main artwork was completed, I cut it out and glued it to a frosty blue border.
