CELEBRATION OF BURNS NIGHT - Monday 26th January 2026 - Sadly both Trudy and Simon were too unwell to join us this evening so Penny and David called for us instead.
Everyone had made an effort to wear something tartan, as had been requested. David C wore a kilt, sporran, flashes and fancy shirt while David S (our balloon artist) fashioned himself a kilt, sporran, Tam O'Shanter and bagpipes from balloons - he marched around the hall "playing" the bagpipes with music from his mobile.
During the interval we enjoyed both original and vegetarian haggis together with neeps and tatties cooked by David H and served with help from Sue, followed by cups of tea or coffee, served by David and Gill S and Scottish shortbread biscuits, donated by Muriel, Ruth, Penny T and Wendy.
After the interval Penny W taught the members the "Cumberland Reel", a Scottish country dance performed as a 4 couple longways set. This dance involved familiar moves - promenade, stars, single cast and dive thru. Penny followed this by teaching "Clopton Bridge", which was very similar to Scottish country dancing, in that it was also performed as a longways set, with the Ends dancing with their diagonal opposite to perform a left and right arm turn before returning to place. This dance also involved stars and weaving down the line.
At the end of the evening everyone who had been involved in its planning etc. was thanked with all those present agreeing that they had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
