Penny and David                 "Flying Solo together"

Monday 4th April 2022

None of our regular callers, Trudy, Simon nor Andrew, were available to call for us this evening so the Committee invited Penny and David to take the next step on their calling journey and call to the Club for a whole night. In the past they have had the assistance of either Trudy or Simon to put things right if they went wrong but this time they were "flying solo".  They were joined on stage by David S who acted as our M.C. for the night.  Despite a few technical hiccups the evening went very well and the three squares enjoyed dancing to our "home grown" callers. We were very pleased to welcome back our former members, Janet and Paul Godley, who had come along to support Penny and David. David's singing calls for the evening were: "Ghost Riders in the Sky"; "I'm Busted" (now with reworked lyrics by David to reflect the current situation in the country); "Time Slips Away" (performed in public by David for the first time) and lastly "For Ever and Ever, Amen". Penny's singing calls were: "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" (Penny told us that she had performed this at her first Caller School, her first singing call at Waggoners and the first time she took part in the Open Mic session at the Hogsmill Squares Bournemouth Bonanza weekend); "Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner"; "Thank You For the Music"; "Sing a Rainbow".   During the evening we enjoyed fruit cake and lemon drizzle cake which Janet and David had baked for us.

Simon and Trudy finished the evening with two duets: "On and On" and "Love Song"

Monday 11th April 2022 - E A S T E R   P A R T Y

Postponed from Christmas 2021, tonight we held an Easter Party in aid of Herts Musical Memories, a charity which delivers singing sessions for people living with dementia and their carers.  Over £300 was raised on the night by members donating their entrance fees and buying balloon daffodils and by taking part in a raffle and various fundraising games including a Hoopla Bunny, Crazy Golf, Tossing a Ball, Guessing the number of Mini Eggs in a tube, Finding a Chick inside an egg, Drawing a Rabbit on a plate while holding it on top of your head and choosing a Lucky Square, numbered 00-99, which corresponded with the last two digits of the serial number of a £50 note obtained unseen from the bank last December by our Treasurer. During the evening we enjoyed Hot Cross Buns, bought and buttered by our Secretary, Janet, and some Lindt chocolates donated by Rosaleen. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Rosaleen D and to Brian S who will both celebrate their birthdays over Easter. We also sang "Happy Anniversary" to Bob P and his wife Ann and to Trudy and Simon who celebrated their Wedding Anniversary last week while they were away on a short break holiday. For the final Tip of the evening Trudy and Simon sang duets of "On and On" and "Love Song".

Monday 25th April 2022 - Simon called for us this evening as Trudy had to stay home to take part in a Zoom meeting in connection with their Church. Our Chairman, Bob, gave us the sad news that Andrew would no longer be calling for us at Waggoners as he had decided to retire from Square Dance calling and dancing with immediate effect. When the latecomers eventually arrived we were able to dance three squares. Just before the break Simon announced a "Hot Hash" and two squares had great fun as they tried to keep up with his fast and furious calling. Later on Simon asked for suggestions for a move that the dancers wanted to be workshopped and "Spin Chain Thru" was put forward. After practising  the move from all positions and combinations of man/woman dancers, we hope that everyone will feel more confident when "Spin Chain Thru"  is called in future. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Janet F who will be celebrating later this week. Bob F acknowledged that he was grateful for the reminder of his wife's birthday!
