UFC Ultimate Fight Night 33 preview
UFC Ultimate Fight Night 33 is this Friday live from Brisbane Australia and will feature a host of exciting matchups, the main event is a heavyweight bout between Mark Hunt and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva which I'm sure won't be the piss break fight on the card (or at least I hope not)
Mark Hunt vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva
Hunt is coming off a knockout loss to Junior dos Santos which earned fight of the night honours at UFC 160. During the fight, Hunt suffered a toe injury and afterwards contracted an infection stemming from an infected haematoma on his leg. Hunt is obviously recovered and ready to go, he faces Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva who is coming off his second TKO loss to Cain Velasquez.
Both fighters are known for their heavy hands but Bigfoot comes into this fight with a black belt in three different disciplines (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Shotokan Karate and Judo) so we know that he's covered no matter where the fight goes but as a fan of both fighters I hope to see them enter the octagon and put on one hell of a show.
Hunt comes into this fight as the underdog, he has been written off time and time again but he has stepped in and proved many people wrong. Bigfoot could easily take Hunt down, get a dominant top position and make this a hard night for Hunt but at the same time Hunt could just swing at Bigfoot's head till the lights go out.
Personally I'd love a Hunt K.O but more realistically we're going to see Bigfoot's hand raised at the end....WAR HUNT!
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. James Te Huna
Shogun steps into the octagon on a two fight skid, something he hasn't experienced before in his illustrious career. He has fought a who's who of mixed martial arts stars since his debut in 2002 yet he is still only 32, at this age he will surely have high hopes of recapturing that UFC gold, a win over Te Huna might not throw him into title contention but it will no doubt be a step in the right direction.
Te Huna came into the UFC and went 1-1 then put together 4 straight wins to go 5-1 but he was derailed by a submission loss to Glover Teixeira at UFC 160. Te Huna is no doubt going to try and use his power to control Shogun but whether that will be enough to take out Shogun remains to be scene.
Te Huna believes he can finish Shogun and recently said "Shogun is very durable, he is hard to put away... I think I can be that person to do it,” Te Huna definitely has the power but as is the case with Shogun of late it just depends which 'Shogun' turns up. Shogun will look to use his jab effectively but also try not to get planted on the matt, he is susceptible to takedowns and with the pressure Te Huna is likely going to put on Shogun he needs to be smart with his strikes and lookout for inevitable takedown attempt from Te Huna.
Te Huna has the power to win this but at the end of the day I think Shogun comes in focused and takes the win by TKO
Ryan Bader vs. Anthony Perosh
Ryan Bader makes the trip to Australia to face old man Perosh (no offense should be taken in the comment as clearly old guy's rule) which most probably isn't you're most anticipated bought of the night. Bader is another fighter on this particular card who's last fight was a first round loss to Glover Teixeira, he is known for his wrestling base and powerful hands albeit not extremely accurate.
Perosh may have you thinking he will be stepping into this fight as the crafty veteran but at age 41 he has only had 2 more professional fights than Bader but to credit him he only started fighting at age 31, but has been training in martial arts since 1995. Perosh a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu shouldn't struggle too much on the ground but at the same time Bader carries a Purple belt so is obviously prepared if the fight hits the matt.
This should be a win for Bader but with a good amount of submission victories and that quick knock out of Vinny Magalhães at UFC 163 Perosh does have a shot.
Pat Barry vs. Soa Palelei
Pat Barry, an MMA fan favourite steps into face Soa Palelei, Barry comes into this fight with a mixed UFC career currently running a 5-6 record while Palelei comes in to this bout riding a 9 fight win streak, with only one of those wins in the UFC.
Barry is clearly going to try and keep this fight on the feet for as long as possible as Palelei holds a black belt in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and we all know Barrys history with BJJ, Barry may feel he has the advantage in the striking department and he most probably does but Palelei is no slouch having taken 15 out of his 19 wins by TKO or KO.
Barry needs to come into this fight in shape, Palelei gassed in his last fight against Nikita Krylov (although did cite a rib injury as the reason). If he can keep the fight active by moving in and out with his strikes he will be able to see how big of a tank Palelei actually has. He also needs to keep the fight standing, utilizing those powerful leg kicks but keeping his distance from Palelei, something that might be difficult with his limited range.
Palelei with his limited gas tank last time out still has a great shot at getting the win here, he needs to close the distance, get Barry against the cage to limit his striking and score some takedowns using his wrestling skills. If he can get Barry to the ground he can put that black belt to work but ultimately he needs keep focused and not get drawn into a stand-up war.
Tough one to call, Barry could go in survive a couple of rounds while keeping the pace up and finish Palelei or Palelei could come in neutralize Barrys offense, take him down and submit him. I think Barry comes in prepared gets the win and brings his record back into nuteral territory.
Want to have a moan about the article or my 'old guy's' comment? let me know @Moldiver @mma_show and I'll let you know how I still have hopes of one day seeing Cro Cop High kicking his way back to gold.
