On Top 3
The prestigious Kelvin Hall in Glasgow opened its doors to Mixed Martial Arts for the first time tonight. On Top moved to the historic boxing venue for its third show and yet again enhanced their reputation as being one of the leading shows in Scottish MMA and an emerging leader in the UK Scene. 12 Pro bouts took place on a thrilling card with high production values which seen the Bantamweight and Lightweight belts find their first owners.
In the main event and final of the four man tournament to crown a lightweight champion, the dark horse Mamour Fall defeated Bobby Mcvittie by majority decision. Mcvittie did appear to have the Frenchman in trouble early with an arm triangle from bottom half guard but the Frenchman resisted and controlled much of the fight from top position. Mcvittie was unable to get off much meaningful offence in the fight other than some crowd pleasing superman punches but Fall, although in control didn’t, cause too much damage.
In the earlier Semi Final bouts both eventual finalists had fairly straightforward routes to the main event . Mcvittie submitted Scott Jansen by guillotine choke in just 21 seconds after an awesome judo throw. Contender Asia star Sean Wright was fancied by many to take the tournament but unfortunately broke his leg in just thirteen seconds when Fall checked a powerful low kick. We wish Sean a speedy recovery and hope to see him in action again soon.
The Co main event Scotland’s James Doolan (10-5-2) faced the highly regarded Spanish prospect David Aranda (6-0). Doolan was looking to get back to winning ways following defeat to Findland’s Sirwan Kakai on Super Challenge and consecutive draws with UFC bound Vaughan Lee and Michael Hammersmid. Unfortunately for Thaison it wasn’t to be as he lost by Rear naked choke in the fourth round. The fight to that point had been a tactical battle with Doolan making Aranda carry his weight against the cage for much of the fight.
In domestic battle to crown the nations number one welterweight and earn a title shot in the 77KG division, D Units John Quinn (8-1-1) faced Fifer Stevie “Fucking” Ray (6-2) in a much anticipated encounter. Ray recently defeated Quinn’s teammate Scott Ward at SFC in a phenomenal fight in which he showed amazing heart against a highly favoured opponent. Ray was again the underdog and again shocked the Dinky Ninja’s by taking out Quinn in 57 seconds of the first round. Both fighters started fast and looked dangerous but following a brief knockdown Ray seemed a second ahead of Quinn and finished with hard shots to the fallen Quinn. Ray continues to impress and with current form could very well be the first Scotsman to reach the UFC.
Amongst the many highlights Brian Hislop dismantled his opponent in a decisive first round stoppage against Sham Haque. Donni Miller showed a tight submission game, finishing his fight by triangle at the second attempt following being slammed out of the first and journeyman Olivier Pastor dented John Cullen’s record with an early stoppage. Allan Johnston continued to impress earning a first round submission by guillotine over the experienced Chris Carmichael following some nice ground and pound.
On Top returns in February which gives us plenty of time to debate who should be on the card. With all three titles heading to the continent it would be great to see some home grown talent challenge for the straps. Ray has earned a rematch with Musoke and McVeigh v Aranda would be a fantastic headliner. Whatever they do, with the level of competition and production values On Top have demonstrated to date in their short history it’s clear that you shouldn’t miss it!
