In reality most fans just sit on there arse, eyes and mind glued to the screen, there dreams of participation sidelined for the easy fix of combat drama from there respective brand of choice! Others , however instead of filling there faces with copious amounts of empty calories and screaming at a screen (I am guessing they do this as well), get motivated and begin a life full of participation in the sport they love.
One young man with ambition and drive, not only to participate in the sports he loves, but to get out there and actively push the sport he loves. The young fella in question is Majid Gilani. I spoke to Majid at length on the phone to find out about his latest project. Organising events and seminars with the express intent of improving the level of BJJ practice in Pakistan. Yes Pakistan!!
An active competitor and seasoned blue belt from Glasgow’s Gracie Barra under Ricky Gillon, Majid has been around Scotlands Martial Arts scene for a number of years starting off his love of the martial arts with Muay Thai (SMTC Scotland) before moving into MMA (Fighters Hive), he now focuses on BJJ and will soon be off to Pakistan to compete on the 7th of Feb .
Anyone remotely interested in BJJ could tell you generally speaking that Pakistan is not the epi centre of world class Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
“Just like the way Scotland is maybe five or so years behind England, Pakistan when it comes to BJJ is probably a good fifteen years behind us” Majid said.
The question is then, why? Why go to Pakistan to compete? As someone actively working to improve his game, he would be better competing write here in Scotland. We know this and Majid knows this, with his roots and friends in Pakistan, this is where Majid will go, this is where he will do his bit, to promote the sport he loves.
“There will be a few other blue belts at the competition from the USA and Canada. Like an international coloured belts competition. The main thing for me is this competition with garner interest in BJJ, it will light the fire for the sport I love”,
“ The plan is to get them hooked and to get them interested in developing the BJJ scene, and an awareness for the GI game.”
“My event is called 'The Pakistan Grappling Challenge' where it is non-profit where in the next event a part of the money generated from entry fees will go towards the atrocities in Peshawar on the 16th of December. ”
Now that is passion, the sort of passion that one encounters time and time again within Scotland’s BJJ/MMA community. You can always tell the folk that train and the folk that just enjoy the sport as entertainment. Majid has a tenacious drive to spread the joy of BJJ that one only develops through years of rolling and mat time .
Majid then casually dropped in that he had secured Yousuf Nabi a renowned Dela Heva Black belt, who will travel to Pakistan from England in May, for a 10 Day seminar at minimal cost to the Pakistani participants. Securing Yousuf and his knowledge and expertise, guarantees the future of Pakistan’s BJJ journey will get off with great pedigree.
“I believe that these events can be something more for the martial arts community aside from the ongoing violence and corruption in Pakistan and it can open the doors for many people in terms of exposure to the fastest growing sport in the world. “
Inspirational stuff, hats off to Majid . A young fella taking the time to inspire , organise and assist in the growth of BJJ in Pakistan.
Majid has had lots of help in organising the events in Pakistan from both the Scottish Martial Arts and Pakistani Martial Arts communities and would like to thank Zubair Asghar, BSKYB Livingston, Glasgow Kickboxing , Fighters Hive
