A short follow up interview with Joanne Calderwood before her ON TOP 4 fight .
Since we spoke to you last, you have now got a Confirmed fight at ON TOP 4, against a top French opponent, this will be the first pro womans MMA fight to be held in Scotland and so far it has received some interesting coverage. Can you talk a little about your opponent, the weight that’s been lifted now that you can focus and train with an opponent in mind , your prep, the controversy over your fight, the support you'v had from your team and the Scottish MMA community, the MSP opinions and how they changed ?
Im very pleased and excited about finally getting to fight MMA, thankfully John Nicholson the On top match maker searched everywhere for an opponent for me even when it seemed like there was no one out there. Im really happy that ON TOP promotions for putting on the first female bout up here in Scotland and giving me a chance to show a big crowd what female MMA is all about.
My opponent is Noellie Molina comes form a good team in the blackout academy in Monaco. She has a Thai boxing background with a record of 9-2 and like me will be making her MMA début. Getting matched has took massive weight off my shoulders that has been put back on a weights bar by my strength and conditioning coach Paul McVeigh.
This is the most excited ive been about a fight in a while due to the fact i get to try out new stuff and play with new toys in this fight.
Training has been great, im training at the best gym in Scotland and one of the top teams in UK and Europe which is already a massive advantage to me.
Obviously this is my first MMA fight camp, although i have been around all my team mates going through countless MMA camps and i know how hard it is so kind of knew what to expect. Training has been awesome, there are 7 other ninjas on the same show so the gym has been busy and 2012 has started with a bang for the team with lots of hard work getting done, everyone is pushing each other and the fighters are getting sharper and stronger by the session.
There was a wee bit of controversy about my fight but only from a few MMA haters, one being a noted female rights campaigner and MSP Sandra White who admitted to not knowing much about the sport but claimed to not like it. I think she was basically put in a position to comment about something she didnt know about.
Thankfully Sandra ended up coming up to our gym after my team mate Dean Reilly bombarded her on twitter and the visit seemed to open her mind to the fact that we are pretty much normal people, dedicated athletes and doing something we love doing when we step into a ring or cage.
If anything the controversy wont have harmed the sport, they say there's no such thing as bad publicity and this would be the case here.
