A Mouth guard is an essential piece of kit for any active combatant, as you have probably experienced with a quick search on Google, there are thousands of options from £1 boil and bites to Dentist fit designer guards with diamonds embedded.
Lets cut through the waffle and tell you about a good, decent and sturdy mouth guard, that's steeped in technological awesomeness but how good are they really? Let me tell you.
This is BADBOYS Battle Ready, Multi Sport Mouth Guard .
First Impressions
The familiar Bad boy Branding I have come to know and associate with quality, the guard is fairly slim, it has two or three layers of various materials (Rubber and Plastic). The inner tray protecting the top teeth is lined with rubber and reinforced with Plastic and the lower side has White shock absorbers around the molar area. Protective carry case has air vents for freshness. First impressions are it looks mint ! Lets get it in my mouth.
Boil
Instructions state 90 seconds in boiling water before biting. I stared at the guard as it floated helplessly in the boiled water , after 90 seconds I scooped it out and fired it straight into my mouth, surprisingly it did not melt the roof of my mouth and i was able to bite straight down on it, unlike other guards I have had, this is possibly due to the inner rubber layer. The mouth guard is robust and due to the dual/ triple layers involved I did not secure the optimum bite in my first two attempts, on the third boil I sucked hard on the bite and hay presto . (I would recommend less than 90 seconds say 60 , as it looked as if was beginning to shrink at 90)
Fit
All in all my teeth are pretty regular and the moulded guard covers all my teeth well. It feels secure and is indeed SOLID.
Breathing
This took a little time to get used to with this guard, as it has more protection for my lower teeth and therefore my jaw than my current mouth guard (which is a cheap boiler that only sticks to my top teeth and doesn’t cover my back molars!! ) But time is something I have and with one hours grappling class the breathing was no longer an issue, in fact in hindsight I think it was just getting used to a new guard.
Jaw Tiredness
After the grappling my jaw was a little tired, this could be put down to the fact that the Bad boy Battle ready mouth Guard is a little thicker than my current Boiler, and my jaw just needs a few session to get used to the new guard.
Protection
The Protection is GOOD, I devised two tests, Test 1 getting hit and Test 2 rolling around.
Test 1, As you can see (above) I got my friend and regular MMA Show contributor Stevie to hit my around the face , which he seemed to enjoy a little too much . Jaw and teeth remained and through out felt strong, secure with no slackness or wobble in the jaw.
Test 2- The grappling session, I must confess I am a bitter, let em explain, I like to bite down hard on the guard when rolling and in this session I was continuously biting down on as I defended having my face crushed as my team mates pursued various chokes etc on my request and through out it felt good . (not the chokes and face crushers , they never feel good).
Quality
Its a Bad Boy product, its the most expensive in the range, around £15 and you get that in quality through out the product.
Quick Overview – A quality MMA brand you can trust, good fit, solid protection, competitively priced .
