On Top celebrated its first birthday with their fourth show on Sat 25th February at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall. Despite 2 fights being pulled from the card late it was a great event.
In a 5 round war of a main event Martin Delaney challenged frenchman Mamour fall for the lightweight title he won following his tournament victory last year. In a back and forth bout rounds were traded. But in the end two of the three judges opted to give Delany the nod, earning him a split decision win.
Delaney had started well edging the first round on my card and controling in the second. However, Fall hurt him badly on the feet in the third but Delaney was able to limit the damage inflicted when the frenchman followed him to the ground. Fall controlled in the fourth but Delaney showed tremendous heart and submission defence coming back strong in the fifth, taking Fall down controlling from top and picking his shots.
The MMA Show look forward to seeing who On Top bring in to challenge Delaney for the belt in the future. With Delaney now undefeated as a pro at 6-0 and with three of his wins at On Top we’d like to see someone from the top 10 end of the UK rankings brought in.
Result: Martin Delaney defeats Mamour Fall by Split Decision and becomes the new lightweight Champion.
In the Co main event Top European Featherweights Sergej Grecicho (lithuania) battled Olivier Pastor (France) for the right to fight for the promotions vacant featherweight belt at a future show. Sambo practitioner Grechico showed nice takedowns and ground control throught the three round fight taking each round on our card. The judges agreed and we look forward to seeing Sergej back in the on top cage. Pastor, although clearly losing, showed great defensive grappling to prevent Grecicho being able to finish with strikes or submissions.
Grecicho’s opponent for the featherweight title has yet to be announced. If On Top are planning to put a Scots based fighter in with the Lithuanian then it will be interesting to see who they go for. The top featherweights are all Dinky Ninja’s and with Pastor having recently make quick work of Cullen, Grecicho outpointing Nardini in his last visit and Whiteford (who’s bout was pulled tonight due to ilness) only having fought once in front of a scotish crownd in recent times. There is no standout contender. Graham Turner could be an option, dependant on his contract status with Cage Warriors following his recent loss to Matteus Lahdesmaki. However, with on Top looking to elevate their status to an international level it wouldnt shock us to see another top european brought in.
Result: Sergej Grecicho defeats Olivier Pastor by unanimous decision.
Glasgow’s Bryan Hyslop faced his third consecutive oppenent from the north of England when he stepped into the On Top cage with Mark Platts. Hyslop has had a somewhat meteoric rise through the rankings since turning pro and has won every pro fight to date. Unfortunately for the popular Glasgow fighter and the noisy crowd in attendance to cheer him on his streak was brought to and end when Platts forced him to tap to a rear naked choke in the second minute of the second round.
It had been a good fight until that point with Hyslop scoring takedowns and landing ground and pount and Platts threatening with the anaconda choke. Platts, who has campainged at bantamweight for much of his career looked good at featherweight and has the skills to give anyone a tough fight. Were sure OnTop will be looking to match each of them up again in the future.
Result: Mark Platts defeats Brian Hyslop by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) 2mins round 2
Stevie Ray made quick work of Vaidas Valancius (Lithuania) in their welterweight bout. Ray scored an early takedown and mounted his opponent with ease before delivering punches and elbows which forced Valancius to give up his back. Ray secured the choke and forces the tap in 2mins 44 secs.
We are getting used to seeing Ray dominate and much like Delaney we’d like to see him matched with some of guys on the top end of the UK rankings.
Result: Steven Ray defeats Vaidas Valancius by submission (Rear naked Choke) 2mins 44.
Allan Johnstone continued to impress scoring a first round sub win (kimura) over Ousmane Sidibe(France) Sidibe was not happy claiming not to have tapped but from our vantage point (and photo’s) the shoulder lock was deep and tight.
Result: Allan Johnstone defeats Ousman Sidibe by submission (Rear naked Choke) 1st round.
Danny Hendry from Headhunters in Edinburgh earned his second pro win over a Dinky Ninja, submitting Kieran Malone in the first round by rear naked choke in round 1. Malone scored and early takedown and briefly held mount. Malone gave up positional control to try and secure and armbar but Hendry was able to escape take malones back and finish him in the 4th minute.
Result: Danny Hendry defeats Keiran Malone by submission (rear Naked Choke) 4 mins 4 secs round 1.
Joanne Calderwood who turned in an excellent performance over her french opponent Noelia Milina. Joanne looked sharp on the feet as you would expect from such a decorated thai boxer but also showed takedowns and groound control , mounting her opponent and delivering vicous ground and pound to earn a stoppage. Heres hoping she can get matched again soon!
Result Joanne Calderwood defeats Noelia Milina by TKO 3mins 13 rd 1.
Adam Stevenson was dropped by Kyle Cassidy early in their bout, Cassidy threw some wild ground and pound which arm bar specialist Stevenson was able to capitalise on, locking up the arm and earning the submission win in 1 min 11 seconds.
Result:Adam Stevenson defeated Kyle Cassidy by submission (Armbar) 1 min 11 seconds round 1.
James Mcallister made quick work of late replacement Peter Smith, landing hard knees and ground and pound to earn the TKO in 56 seconds of round 1.
Result: James Mcallister defeated Peter Smith by TKO in 56 Seconds round 1
Former commonwealth boxing champ craig Docherty debuted against late replacement Nathan Thompson. Thompson is renowned for getting in the ring with anyone, often at short notice, and whilst his gameness cant be questioned the 4-27 record he took into this fight tells its own story. Thompson understandably didnt want to trade punches and looked to clinch and drag “hot property” Docherty down. He has brief sucess in doing this and found himself on Dochertys back standing. Docherty was able to escape and landed some brutal body shots earning a TKO in the 3rd minute.
Result: Craig Docherty defeats nathan Thompson by TKO 3 mins round 1
