For Peter McCafferty evolving as a fighter is as important as getting the win on Saturday the 1st of March at On Top 7 in Glasgow. He faces off against Mark Duncan in an amateur C class bout at 135lbs but the expectation for this fight is high and fans are expecting a technical battle between the two.
McCafferty fights out of Stirling’s Chimera fight team and I caught up with him recently to talk about his upcoming fight, his team and how he first got interested in mixed martial arts.
“I first got into MMA through Tae Kwon Do and wanted to develop my skills. I especially wanted to have a wide and high standard of different skills to put together but for them to work in harmony with one another also. The most enjoying aspect of mixed martial arts for me is the variety that we train but you can’t beat a good stand up battle. The technical aspect of the ground game makes it difficult for me to pick which I prefer.”
“My coach Colin Lyon has pushed and inspired me above all others and he definitely keeps me on the right path.”
“I was meant to be fighting at On Top’s last show which was cancelled so when they got in touch with my coach and I jumped at the chance”
“My opponent, Mark Duncan, I heard he has good strength but I don’t think he will be as technical as me or that he will even be as strong as me. He’s never fought anyone like me before. We’ve studied his fighting style down to a T and we have a few game plans figured out. I’ve been in the gym 6 days a week so I’m putting in the effort.”
McCafferty fought last and won on September 1 2013 at SFC ‘Tear Up’ 7 in Stirling against Rhys McKee. McCafferty picked McKee apart in a highly technical display and won by TKO in round 2. McCafferty credits that fight as one he learned a lot through, “I learned so much from my last fight about staying composed. I fought a bit recklessly in the past and perhaps my last fight was more composed. I’ll take what I learned forward into my next fight at On Top and I’ll be a better fighter over all. I’ve upped my game considerably. I’m better, faster and stronger.”
McCafferty talked about his preparation for this fight and how much he enjoys fighting out of Chimera, “For my last few fights I’ve worked on my nutritional knowledge, the weight is coming off nicely and my energy levels are through the roof. This camp has been about 7-8 weeks long and we’ve put it together very smoothly. I love fighting out of Chimera, I don’t believe in moving to improve at this point in my fight career, every club or school teaches things differently. I can go to other gyms for specific sparring etc but Chimera will always be my gym. You need to believe in your home.”
“I will be going pro eventually, 100%. I need to iron out some creases but I’m only 19 and I’ve got years ahead of me.”
On Top 7 is being held at the Glasgow City Centre Hilton on Saturday 1 March 2014 with the first fight scheduled for 8pm.
