A short Interview with Steven Ray ahead of his ON TOP 4 fight .
Hello Steven, you are Scotland’s best Welterweight, for those not familiar with your background, can you give us a wee summary ?
I've been training MMA for two and a half years now, I've had 17 MMA fights , of which I've won 15 (10 Subs, 4 T/kos and 1 Decision).
You were recently out in the USA for the UFC trials, how was the experience? Has the experience gave you the hunger to succeed ?
USA/ TUF It was great getting an opportunity to go out, I had a great time and feel the trials went well (obviously not as good as I thought). I will just need to keep beating people up over here for a while.
You’ve been fighting top tear talent of late, your next fight is at ONTOP 4, can you tell us a little about your opponent and your prep?
My opponent is very experienced, he has been fighting for over 12 years and is a Judo black belt, so he obviously knows his shit. He is a tough guy and he has fought some tough opposition, he is currently coming off a loss to top prospect Ryan scope.
You are famous in Scotland for having a great crowd, and loyal fan base , is this important , fighting for the fans etc?
I bring a lot of fans with me, I have a good fan base in Scotland, I like to put on a good show for them, saying that 9 of my fights have ended in the first round and most in the 1st minute. So sometimes, although it's great winning so quick, it can be a bit gutting for my fans, as they didn't see too much but they love it anyway!!
You've only been training in MMA for a few years, what drives you to train hard and excel?
Since a young age I've been a guy who always wants to win, I don't like 2nd or 3rd, I always wanna be the best and knowing that training hard pays off come fight night, this is enough for me. The harder I push myself the easier it will be on the night!
A family man , what do you do to relax?
I live with my gf and my son who is 10 months old I'm lucky my gf understands what training is to me and she knows I need to train and has always supported me. I have a lot of support from my family and friends which is amazing, any time I'm not working or training I'll spend it with my family and friends.
Any inspiration and advice for anyone looking to get into MMA ?
You only live once! MMA changed my life, don't leave it too late to give it a go, it could do the same for you even if it's only for fitness don't wait until your fit to come along that's pointless!! Training MMA will get you fit .
