BJJ Glasgow Open 2011
Since Rorian Gracie introduced America, and most of the world outside of his native Brazil, to MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 1993 the art which his family is renowned for has exploded the world over. There’s no denying that the ability to apply the principles and techniques which make up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an essential skill set for any mixed martial artist hoping to make an impact in the sport.
BJJ has been around in Scotland for a number of years and whilst the skills transfer well to the cage there are also a growing number of participants looking to test themselves in a pure grappling environment. James McIntyre has been putting on tournaments in Glasgow for a number of years and this year’s Glasgow open , which takes place at the Kelvin Hall next Saturday will see the largest gathering of BJJ enthusiasts the country has seen gather in Glasgow to throw, choke and twist each other into submission. With upwards of 200 competitors from the Uk and Europe scheduled to compete the event will be a thrilling day out for spectators and competitors alike.
This year’s event see’s both No Gi and Gi single elimination tournaments take place on the same day. For those unfamiliar with the sport the; the Gi is the traditional “kimono” worn by combatants, similar to those worn in Judo but slightly more fitted. The Gi can be used to control and choke your opponent and adds another element to the fight those only familiar with MMA style grappling won’t be used to. In the event of a fight going the distance points awarded by the referee throughout for advancing position, or advantage points for close submission attempts or sweeps will determine the winner. If no points or advantages are awarded the referee will decide who progresses.
A large number of Scotland’s MMA competitors are expected to compete in what should be an excellent day of action across numerous weight, belt and experience categories. Spectator entry costs only £5 and we thoroughly recommend you get yourself along!
