First off can you give us a we break down of who you are, record, style, achievements etc. ?
5-5 mixed martial artist whose greatest achievements are yet to come.
Its been a while since we have seen you in the cage, just over a year, your last outing being a 12 sec TKO defeat. Has this experience, shaped , moulded and reinvigorated you for your upcoming Cagewarriors appearance ?
I took a step back from the sport and had a good look at myself, felt I’d neglected some areas of my game and decided to work on a few things and find my love for the sport again. Looking back on my losses I feel I've lost every fight myself in one way or another, I've taken what believe are the right steps to make sure that doesn't happen again. I'm feeling great and looking amazing now and time for me to step out of the shadows and produce what I know I'm capable of.
Mick Kay is not very famous round these parts, two wins by KO (one TKO) and two defeats (one sub, one decision) in a the little research I found he leans towards the striking game – how do you plan to tackle him and what’s your thoughts on Mr Kays game ?
He comes from a good team and he'll be well rounded and prepared, I'm just going to go in and fight him.
Thee Mark Conner is also fighting on the card, having fellow DNFT brother on the card must help with training, preparation , travel etc , Can you talk a little about how its all been coming along ?
Everything is going well, feels like I've been training for a fight since March so I'm good to go. I'm always in shape and I'm always training hard and trying to improve. We've been busy as a team so everyone has been working together to get each other ready.
The DNFT has such an extensive pool of talent, can you pinpoint anything in particular that makes you guys stand out so far within Scottish MMA?
Iron sharpens iron, and we train hard AND smart.
A good win with Cagewarriors will see you hopefully travel further a field , does this excite you ? (As you have fought in Japan etc )
I'd love to go back to Japan and fight again, I love the place, food and culture. CW are cool and they have shows everywhere, I've been asked to help out on the show a couple of times which is really cool. They are doing great things for the sport, fighting abroad is a great excuse for a holiday. Once the cage door shuts it doesn't matter where the fuck you are.
Have you been to Liverpool before ? Will you be taking in the Cavern etc ?
I've been a bunch of times for fights, I'm more of a Hendrix man tbh.
Your known to travel for good quality training , do you have anywhere planned for after Cagewarriors?
I really want to go back to Marcelo Garcia's in NYC, really cool gym, great training and people, I also really want to go to Rio and Iceland.
You'v been know to integrate the latest techniques, ideas and technology into your training / coaching , (go pro cameras etc) Do you believe this is an integral part of always being at the forefront of the ever evolving sport of MMA ?
I'm always trying to learn and improve, might as well give up if you don't. I like to try new methods/techniques extra to keep myself and guys training with me entertained. Go pro is mostly so I can fuck about and have fun.
Known as one of the best corner men in Scottish MMA, Do you think the cornering team in other clubs in Scottish MMA haven’t yet clicked on as to how important a good corner is ?
Thanks for the compliment, never heard that one before, nice to hear as its something I care a lot about.
I don't really pay too much attention to the opposite corner tbh apart from noticing that they aren't as cool as me. I'm sure they appreciate how important a corner is but maybe some of them don't know what they're actually doing or why they are there. I love seeing guys go in and immediately unload about 372 pieces of vital information to their fighter! I think cornering is a skill in itself, I used to be shit and too involved but again I work on it daily.
What's the best thing you'v heard being shouted out from the oppositions corner? Mines is “your cardio is unquestionable” and “Stand up” that's always a classic .lol
"KNEES FAE THE BOOTUM KEN!" and I should add that BJ Penn's corner advice is fucking terrible.
'you want this BJ...you can do eett' .
When top international coaches and fighters come to gyms through out Scotland do you check them out or just stay put at the Griphouse ?
I'd happily visit other gyms in Scotland but I don't have a lot of free time as it is. Sunday is the only day I'm not doing something in the Grip and generally spend it on the sofa relaxing, if and when my schedule allows I'd be happy to attend.
Good you give some advice for someone getting into MMA ? Someone looking for there first steps into eating clean?
Be open to learning and working hard, just because something works or doesn't work for one person doesn't mean it won't/will for you. Eat as natural as possible.
