Primary Care Careers Pathway
PURPOSE
Residents considering careers in primary care pediatrics (community and academic practice) may opt into the primary care careers pathway. This pathway’s goal is to present residents with options for rotations, mentorship, and other experiences to guide their individualized career development. This pathway is appropriate for all residents, including those who are considering specialty training. The curriculum will focus on deepening understanding of primary care practice including concepts of medical home, outpatient clinical judgment, family-centered care and coordination of care of chronic medical conditions and mental health.
WHEN & HOW
Residents considering careers in primary care pediatrics may incorporate components of the primary care careers curriculum into their individualized learning plan throughout their 3 years of residency. During biannual meetings with their portfolio advisors (both mentors and program directors), residents will reflect on their experiences and determine educational goals for the upcoming six months. This document’s elective menu and timeline provide a starting point for learning plan development.

Advising & Mentoring
First Year
The goal of the first year of pediatric residency is to build a strong foundation of general pediatrics knowledge in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The intern year is designed to introduce core pediatric clinical concepts as well as other important principles related to QI, advocacy, and scholarship. One individualized curriculum (IC) block is available for career exploration and/or development.
June: Advisor and intern meet and greet during orientation
June-September: Advisor and intern meet
June-September: Interns with interest in this pathway will select one experience from the list above for their first year IC rotation. Those who have an elective in the first three months should make a selection from the list above with input and approval from program leadership before starting residency.
September: first individualized learning plan (ILP) meeting with program director (PD) or associate program director (APD).
Jan-March: second advisor meeting to include assessment of career goals and pathway plans
April: second ILP with with PD or APD to include pathway selection and IC choices for the next year. In addition, Identify additional mentors/advisors needed for early match/future career goals. Discuss Certificates of Excellence (COE).
Second Year
During the second year of training, residents will cultivate ICU and subspecialty level skills and begin to commit to a career plan. Second year is designed provide a broad exposure to subspecialties and to help develop leadership and teaching skills. Two IC blocks are reserved for career exploration and/or development.
July-August: Meet with advisor(s). Establish an advisor/mentor in desired pathway. If applicable, work on fellowship/chief year applications.
August: ILP with PD/APD. Discuss pathway selection and second year ICs. Identify additional mentors/advisors needed for fellowship application or future career goal. Discuss scholarly project focus.
March: Second ILP with PD/APD. Plan ICs for third year. Identify project within pathway or certificate of excellence.
April-May: meet with advisor(s). Discuss individual learning needs and IC planning.
Third Year
Third year residents engage in a broad range of clinical care and strengthen leadership and supervisory skills. Three IC blocks are reserved to address individual learning needs, complete projects related to pathways/COE, and prepare for desired career.
July: ILP with PD/APD. Identify learning goals for the year and plans for projects related to pathways/scholarly project.
July-August: Meet with advisor(s). Discuss projects, plans for job search/transition to fellowship. If applicable, work on applications for fellowship positions.
February: ILP with PD/APD.
March-June: complete projects and ICs
