Overview:

This is an inpatient rotation with exposure in particular to pediatric hematology and oncology.

Rotation goals and objectives:

1. Learn the basics of diagnosis and initial management of the most common childhood cancers

2. Understand the acute complications of treatment of childhood cancer, and their management

3. Understand common hematologic reasons for hospital admission including sickle cell disease and ITP

4. Understand and manage issues associated with caring for a child with a life-threatening illness, including pain management and psychosocial support

Prior to the start of the rotation:

1. Obtain signout of patients from the preceding resident

2. Familiarize yourself with the resident handbook located on BOX and in the workroom

First day of the rotation:

1. Go to the workroom on 10S and obtain signout by 7 AM

2. Notify the fellow of when your continuity clinics are for your rotation

Resident Expectations:

1. Residents are expected to preround and examine their patients and be prepared for bedside rounds at 9 AM.

2. Residents should never stay longer than 28 hours on their call shifts. If you are having difficulty with this, please let the chiefs and the attending on know simultaneously in order to find a solution.

3. When you are on your overnight call, please update all notes for the morning with interval events and edits of dates in the assessment and plan

General Schedule:

Monday through Friday:

    • Signout at 7 AM, Morning report at 8:30, Rounds at 9, Noon conference, Signout at 5 PM

Saturday and Sunday:

    • Signout at 7 AM, Rounds at 9 (though can be earlier if preferable to attending/fellow).

If you are going to be absent for all or part of a day:

Same day, please notify:

1. Chief Residents and Mike Grubbs

2. Fellow and attending on service
