Spanish Elective

Elective duration:

2 weeks maximum (and preferred); 1 week possible in special circumstances

Overview:

Improving communication skills and cultural understanding of patients from different backgrounds greatly aids in their care.

Elective goals and objectives:

1. Make progress from level of Spanish language knowledge at which one starts the rotation.

2. Improve on ABP/ACGME Core Competencies of:

A. Patient Care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health

B. Interpersonal and Communication Skills that result in effective information exchange and collaboration with patients, their families, and other health professionals

C. Professionalism as manifested through a commitment to professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population

Resident Expectations:

Complete minimum required modules and provide proof of completion as well as the culturevision assignments below.

Schedule:

Prior to the start of the rotation:

    • A chief needs to be contacted at least 2 weeks prior to rotation that this is what you would like to do. It will then be determined if this should be paired with another experience for the IC.

Curriculum:

1. Rosetta Stone Beginner Curriculum, 2 week (10 day plan):

    1. Unit 1, lessons 1-4 = 5 hours, 40 minutes

    2. Unit 2, lessons 1-4 = 5 hours, 40 minutes

    3. Phrasebook: Health and Safety, 35 phrases, 1 hour

    4. Unit 9, lessons 1-4 = 6 hours

    5. Unit 19, lessons 1-4 = 6 hours

    6. 3 more units of learner’s choosing minimum

2. Must read OHSU CultureVision Information Sections on "Central America" and "Mexico" and choose one section to create an information sheet for outpatient providers to use for reference for a specific population.
