Overview:

Kaiser Permanente is a large pre-paid health care delivery program, which provides total care to its members. This rotation is a chance to practice outpatient pediatrics independently, but with support, in this system. This fulfills an ACGME requirement in community pediatrics.

Rotation goals and objectives:

1. Grow in autonomous practice of outpatient well-child and urgent pediatric care

2. Understand clinic flow and team-based practice and its importance

3. Develop a professional approach to preparing for, managing, and closing a full clinic day

4. Develop a consistent approach to resource utilization in making medical decisions, including consultation of peers as well as published resources

Prior to the start of the rotation:

You must fill out all information sent to you by the Kaiser GME administrator prior to starting the rotation. With any and all questions, please call the GME administrator listed above.

First day of the rotation:

Arrive by 0800. Then you will have a 1hr orientation to the clinic and the computer system. The emailed packet sent to you by the GME administrator ahead of time will have instructions as to how to get to the right location. Please print this packet and bring it with you on your first day as well. You will see patients per your usual schedule for the rest of the day.

Resident Expectations:

1. You will be in clinic full-time Monday through Friday except for the time allotted to required conferences and your continuity clinic. This includes the virtual Kaiser Pediatric Department CME Conference on Tuesdays.

2. You will have a supervising pediatrician for each shift who is available for questions, curbside consults and physical exam skills. We encourage and expect residents to take ownership of the patients they see in clinic and in urgent care. This means following up on labs, sick kids, consults and communicating with the PCP.

3. You will spend 2 days at the fracture clinic. Ideally, one should be spent with the orthopedist and the other with the casting techs. However, if you are looking to gain more experience within either area, please advocate for yourself while you are there.

General Schedule:

4. Note: if you do not complete 90% of the rotation, you will be asked to make up time in order to fulfill this required rotation
