Overview:

The Community Advocacy and Child Health (CACH) rotation provides educational experiences at a variety of community agencies and clinical sites; it also allows time for independent learning activities. These community experiences and activities are designed to increase your awareness of community resources that can benefit children and their families. We hope this broadens your understanding of the social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors that impact child health.

Rotation goals and objectives:

• Compare different health systems and approaches to care in community settings

• Understand social determinants of health and how they impact children and families

• Consider the barriers to accessing adequate healthcare, food, housing, and education

• Identify community resources and supports for families

• Learn about the role of public health and community agencies

• Recognize the pediatrician’s role as a community partner and advocate in improving children’s health

Prior to the start of the rotation:

• Review rotation calendar sent to you by program administrator

• Note that on weekends you are jeopardy for your class (within 1 hr of hospital)

• Plan to attend scheduled orientation meeting with Ellen Stevenson during the first week. During this meeting, you will go over the community health site experiences and independent learning activities.

Resident Expectations:

• As time allows, complete supplemental materials (including readings, videos, and podcasts).

• Attend check-out session at the end of the rotation
