The Career Pathways and Individualized Curricula are designed to prepare pediatric residents for success in their chosen field; a framework for residents to individualize training to meet their unique educational needs. Pathways are not pre-determined tracks, but rather a career development pathway system. They provide guidance to the resident; but are non-binding, and a resident may change pathways should career plans change. Residents have 6 individualized curriculum (IC) rotations throughout their residency training; 1 during intern year, 2 during second year, and 3 during the final year of training.

By the end of intern year, residents identify themselves with one of three pathways: ambulatory medicine, inpatient medicine, and subspecialty care. The pathways are designed to offer a menu of options for IC rotations as well as mentorship and additional experiences to guide residents’ individualized career development. These menus are intended to be a starting point for learning plan development; however, residents are welcome to pursue additional opportunities, or “order off the menu”. Residents receive mentorship and guidance regarding pathway and IC rotation selection from their faculty mentor and program leadership.
