CDRC 3225

Overview:

This rotation gives residents an opportunity to spend time with the inpatient neurology consultation service in addition to outpatient neurology clinics, including specialty clinics, CDRC clinics, and Shriners outpatient center. If you are interested in more outpatient neurology experiences, please reach out to the rotation director prior to the start of the rotation.

Rotation goals and objectives:

    • Residents will become adept at the pediatric neurologic examination

    • Resident will be comfortable with anatomic localization of neurologic deficits

    • Residents will get exposure to and comfortable with a variety of neurologic problems including epilepsy, headache, movement disorders (such as CP/spasticity and tic disorder), neuromuscular, neurometabolic and genetic diseases

    • Residents will become familiar the interpretation of neuroimaging studies and basic concepts of EEG

Prior to the start of the rotation:

Residents are expected to review their specific switch dates and should contact both chiefs and the rotation director prior to the start of the rotation if there are any scheduling conflicts

First day of the rotation:

    • On your first day, please arrive in the 10N workroom at 7:30am to meet the team. The fellow will help assign the resident consult patients that they will follow and present starting the first day of the rotation

    • By the end of the first day, please discuss with the inpatient team to determine 2-4 half days where you will be attending clinic instead of inpatient rounding.

      • Please note, as neurology clinic times are variable these dates should be determined on the first day rather than farther ahead of time

      • If any difficulties scheduling these clinic days, please contact chiefs and rotation director

      • Note, some clinic opportunities take place off campus. While these are not required, they are available for residents to attend

Resident Expectations:

    • For inpatients, residents are expected to write consultation notes (both initial and progress notes)

    • Residents are expected to co-sign student notes when students are following the same patients

    • If the resident is going to continuity clinic, they should sign-out to the fellow and/or attending

    • If the fellow is in clinic, the resident will be expected to carry the pager (fellow forwards to resident) and take first call on consult questions and new consults. The resident will then give updated sign-out to the daytime fellow prior to 5pm. Residents are expected to discuss this with the fellow prior to the start of the afternoon.

    • Conferences: residents should attend their scheduled pediatric educational conferences. In addition, neurology has the following conferences that residents should attend. Please note that grand rounds should be prioritized during this rotation even though it overlaps with the daily pediatric morning conference:

      • Neurology grand rounds 8am Wednesdays (University Hospital South 8B-60)

      • Pediatric neuroimaging review 12pm-1pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month (DCH 10th floor conference room – hallway in between PHO and 10N)

      • Pediatric Neuroscience Seminar at 4pm on Tuesdays (CDRC 3rd floor 3135)

General Schedule:

    • Residents are expected to arrive by 7:30am to review with the fellow which patients will be seen by neurology that day

    • Pre-round on neurology patients prior to AM conference

    • After morning report, residents and students will start rounding:

      • Rounds will start at 9am in the PICU or NICU

        • Please note: the resident will be responsible for discussing meeting place and time with the fellow prior to morning report
