Residents will spend time with inpatient primary endocrine patients, inpatient consults, and outpatient endocrine patients. The outpatient experience will include both diabetes care and the variety of primary endocrine disease processes seen in endocrine clinic.
Rotation goals and objectives:
Residents will experience a combination of inpatient and outpatient management of endocrinology disorders
Residents will be able to identify signs and symptoms of new onset diabetes and will have an understanding of the principles of treatment and disease monitoring over time
Residents will be able to correctly interpret a growth chart and be able to provide a differential for disorders of growth and sexual development. Residents will understand the initial work-up for these issues and when to refer to endocrinology
Prior to the start of the rotation:
Residents should receive sign-out from the preceding resident. This should include sign-out on consult patients and where the team was planning on meeting the next morning (see below)
First day of the rotation:
Residents should meet with the endocrine team as discussed with the previous resident. If there is no previously arranged plan, residents can meet the team as listed below:
Monday through Thursday in the coast workroom at 8am
Fridays in the coast workroom at 7:45am
The morning of the first day, the resident should page Kara Connelly (if not available, discuss with the fellow/attending on service) to review general schedule and ensure resident has a copy of the clinic calendar showing what clinic and what attending the resident will be working with on specific days
Resident Expectations:

Carry out “diabetes for a day” activities (finger poke blood sugar tests, carbohydrate counting, saline injections) for 24 hours.
