EPIC & Chart Tips

EPIC TIPS/Charting:

In Epic, you must be logged into the department “Ped Campus Peds DCH” to view the schedule.

Create YOUR OWN LIST by clicking the "Create" plus sign. Assign a name and template format for your columns (often by clicking copy and using the "Ped Campus" template)

Next, under the schedule for “Ped Campus Peds DCH”, expand the folder to find “PED GENERAL PEDS” and "PED Newborn/Lac" under the long list of provider names. Drag these schedules to your personal schedule for easy viewing. Senior residents should also add "PED EVENING CLINIC".

Once you have dragged this schedule under your personal schedule, right click and select Properties. Click on configuration. Drag the names (using the ADD and REMOVE buttons) of the other residents that you will be working with. If you do not do this, patients will “drop off” of the schedule once the provider is changed.

You must CHANGE PROVIDER (button located on the top blue bar of the schedule) for each clinic visit from General Pediatrics to your name. This helps track which patients you saw for the day. If you forget, the attendings will do it for you through out the day.

Don’t worry if this doesn’t make sense. The attendings or your seniors can show you on your first day in clinic.

Other tidbits:

- Encounters should be closed and sent to attendings for signature within 24 hours of the clinic visit. An encounter without timely documentation is dangerous for continuing patient care for all future providers, whether it be triage nurses, the mommy call resident or the emergency room physicians.

- This is quite a high volume patient rotation, and thus there is a significant amount of charting.

- Senior residents are responsible for writing notes for medical students and sending them to attending for signature. Attendings that staff directly with medical students are responsible for the notes.
