I.E.K.H.S. Gym?

by Raheilio O. L.

What changes will there be to the gym?

Will it be ready for graduation?

Why is the gym not open yet?

There are a lot of questions surrounding the I.E. K.H.S. Gym. I am here from KeanWebExpress to answer some those questions.

The I.E.K.H.S. gym was closed down for construction at the end of last school year, and the students were told that the gym would be ready for the next school year. The target date for completing Phase One of the project was in March 2011, and Phase Two is expected to be finished in August.

Phase One of the project, which is now completed, consisted of redoing the roof, the exterior of the building, and the air conditioning of the gym. “Phase One of the project took longer than expected,” said I.E.K.H.S. physical education department chairperson Mr. Peter Seipel.

In Phase Two, the gym is getting a total makeover. The plumbing in the gym will be redone, so the students will be able to use the showers after exercising and playing games. The floors will be refinished, and the classrooms will be painted and refurnished.

The weightlifting room will also be totally redone. Custom Builders, which has the contract for the reconstruction, will be making the room bigger and will install new equipment.

The gym will be getting a brand new sound system, requiring that the electricity will also be rewired.

There are a lot of nice thing happening to the gym, but there is a bad side to not having the gym this school year. “I felt like we were missing a coach to the team,” said I.E.K.H.S. baseball and football player Yohance D. . While the gym was closed, the students had to stay underneath the bus shed and go to National Park for classes.

While the gym was being repaired, the I.E.K.H.S. lunch league was canceled for this school year; also since the gym was closed, many students found it hard to find some place to hang out during lunch.

The big news is that the gym will be ready for graduation, according to Mr. Peter Seipel. Phase One is the only part of the project that will be completed for graduation. The gym will be open for the next school with all of the renovations completed.

“There will also be a special surprise,” Mr. Seipel told KeanWebExpress, which will be announced when gym is finished.
