Junior Achievement ... Another First at I.E.K.H.S.

This school year, the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School participated in its first Junior Achievement program and competed against a combined Charlotte Amalie High School/All Saints team. The Junior Achievement program was designed to teach students on how to run their own business, market and produce a product, and manage money. The program lasted for about 14 weeks with the grand finale taking place on March 31, 2012.

The Kean team consisted of 17 juniors and seniors from I.E.K.H.S. “[chosen by] the counselors and myself,” said Kean team Advisor Ms. Nancy Callwood. “We were looking for well rounded students who might be interested in owning their own business.”

After the first couple meetings the “Kean team” named their business organization “JA Eventus.” “One of our VP’s and another member used the Latin word for event [Eventus] and put the JA [Junior Achievement] in front,” explained JA Eventus Senior President Shellece Nelson.

JA Eventus hosted two “Students versus Teachers” basketball games, and one “Kean v.s. Town” alumni tournament. When asked if JA Eventus was successful this year, Nelson gave a ecstatic, “Of course!”

A special thanks goes to Alpine Securities, the Ritz Carlton of St. Thomas, and Dr. Sharon McCollum for all of their contributions to the program. Although JA Eventus came in second place this year, the participants gained valuable business knowledge that will help them throughout their lives.
