Father Giles

Father Giles is a canon at the cathedral of Rouen in Normandy. As a young man he was a monk at a monastery devoted to St Romanus, but the monastery was burned down by Owen the Beast, a bandit leader who believed the monastery kept a fabulous treasure. The monks were burned alive and the fact that Giles survived is considered by most to be a miracle. He searched the burnt ruins for any other survivors but it was fruitless; Owen and the flames had done their work well. A few years later, Owen the Beast and his gang of outlaws were hunted down by officers of the King and executed by hanging.

Now a priest and sub-deacon at the cathedral, Giles is known by his fellow priests to be an expert on dark matters, and when cases of devil worship are brought to the bishop's court, Father Giles provides expert testimony. The trauma of the monastery's destruction has left him a very unpleasant man, but his fellow priests try to ignore this, understanding as they do the terrible things he has had to endure. Giles has a habit of assigning very unpleasant tasks as penance, so most of the parishioners try to avoid him. As a result of all this, the Father is usually left to his quiet studies within the cathedral. When he does take confession, it is usually those whom all the other priests avoid, such as prostitutes, witches, and the insane.

Recently, Father Giles has been asked to accompany Lord Auréle de la Croix on a trip to Ireland, where he is to meet with a community of scholars. Auréle has expressed some concern that the scholars may in fact be practicing dark arts, sorcery, and the worship of the Devil. So he has offered to make a large donation to the cathedral if Giles accompanies him on his trip and gives an appraisal of the scholars' activities. Giles did not especially want to go, but the archbishop commanded it. It's possible his fellow priests wanted some time off from the Father's mean-spirited manner.
