Kentigern

Kentigern, magus Ex Miscellanea (in 1217)

A Hibernian beast-mage, Kentigern was appointed a Quaesitor Ex Miscellanea in 1200 and was asked to come to the Alps as the House's chief representative there. His status as a Quaesitor earns him respect, but the magi of the Alps generally look down on him as an inferior hedge magician from the border regions.

As a child, Kentigern was given as tribute to the Ordo Hibernia by the hedge wizards of the Coill Tri. Raised in the covenant of Praesis, he became a member of that covenant upon completing his Gauntlet. Years later, as a mature magus, he experienced a crisis of faith and found solace with a monastic community in Ireland where he became a Christian. As the most powerful of the Hibernian beast-masters, he was the acknowledged leader of that hedge tradition until he left Ireland in 1200. He has learned about the Siege of Praesis, grieves for the loss of his sodales, and curses the name of Baetain Ua Traimair, who he has known for the younger magus's entire life and who Kentigern considered a friend. Kentigern thinks that, had he been at Praesis for the siege, the covenant might have endured, and he is troubled by guilt. He years to see Meadhbh again, the maga who was leader of Praesis and who survived the siege, but remains obliged to fulfill his duty as a Quaesitor in the Alps.

Kentigern has 4th edition stats in Sanctuary of Ice, but must be revised to fit 5th edition. While conversion guidelines suggest adding 20% to a character's age, this would make Kentigern 119 years old and approaching the end of his life. Instead, I have kept him age 99 and reduced his Abilities. I have raised all his Arts to at least 5, so he could have an apprentice. He also gained Summon Animals, Inoffensive to Animals, and Incompatible Arts, to fit the Hibernian beast mages of HoH:S. I have made a few adjustments to make him a more "wild hunt" figure, changing his preferred weapon to spear and giving him a helm with antlers.

In recent years, Kentigern has focused on improving his weak Abilities, including Leadership, Guile and Intrigue. He's also become more proficient in the use of his spear (for enemies protected by magic resistance) and studied teaching, so he can properly instruct Gustov. Gustov's primary use to Kentigern has been as a lab assistant as he finally enchanted his Talisman, a spear which strikes unerringly and returns to Kentigern's hand at mental command.

Tobias can naturally fly and Kentigern has enchanted his collar with Soothe the Pains of the Beast. He wears pawns of Animal vis on his collar to fuel the spell. Their bonds are Golden +1, Silver +2, Bronze +3.

A herd of up to 100 animals of Siz +3 or less are transformed into tiny figurines carved from animal bone. At the next new moon, the animals will return to their true shape.

A variant of Frosty Breath of the Spoken Lie which creates an audible chime instead of frosty breath; in the alps, frosty breath is very common.

Kentigern's Talisman

The shaft of Kentigern's spear is encircled with bands of precious metal and studded with gems. It is these and the wood of the shaft which are enchanted, leaving the Excellent Quality steel spear tip utterly mundane, so that it can slip right through Parma or other magic resistance. The Talisman currently has space for 120 levels of effects, 73 of which are full.

Unerring Throw

The spear flies unerringly to the target, striking it with supernatural force. The spell is powerful enough to inflict a base Damage of +10, with a +7 bonus for the spear's heavy metal tip.
