Azzo entered the University of Bologna at the age of 15 and graduated a Doctor of Law ten years later in 1175, whereupon he was snapped up as a teacher by a covenant in the Roman Tribunal. After several years teaching there, his natural aptitude and pleasant demeanor came to the attention of the Greater Alps, who lured him with a longevity ritual. Azzo taught the magi and apprentices of the Order for many years but remains very healthy. His students refer to him as The Profound Doctor, but the magi simply call him 'Profundus.'

Profundus is generous with his time and energy on behalf of the Tribunal, but is very particular about how he teaches and he will not be pushed around, even by magi. He knows how valuable he is and has had success in the past when he puts his foot down, reinforcing his stubbornness when it comes to pedagogy and instruction. Students are like flowers, he has said many times. If they're not tended just right, they blossom too quickly and then fade. Sometimes, they never open at all. He typically teaches in the spring and autumn, uses the summer to indulge his obsessive gardening habits, and has one genuinely free season in the winter, which he usually spends reading or writing.

Profundus was given the task of translating a book recovered from an abandoned chapter house of Icy North. The book was in both Hebrew and Aramaic, which Profundus did not know. By the end of 1209 he had learned enough Aramaic to read the book, which turned out to be a copy of the famous Sword of Moses (Infernal Lore summa, Level 5, Quality 8). By Winter of 1210 a Latin copy had been presented to Hugh, as per Eva's wishes. The original Aramaic volume is in the library at Valnastium, and Azzo's original Latin translation is now in the library of the new convenat at Uisneach.

After decades of service to the Greater Alps, Profundus asked to be given leave to retire and write his memoirs. With the completion of the Alpine Apprentice project, he has traveled with some of his former students to the Hill of Uisneach in Hibernia, where a new covenant has been founded. Profundus finds the verdant green of Ireland a welcome change from the cold of the Alps, though he does miss the luxurious comforts of Valnastium. So far, his primary duty has been teaching Latin to the covenfolk and Grogs, but in winter he hopes to begin writing a Teaching Summa (Level 5, Quality 12).
