Jocelyne du Bois

Jocelyne was born in 1184, the second daughter of a minor French baron. She enjoyed a life of luxury and sophisticated pleasures in Paris and managed to escape marriage by becoming a tutor in the service of an aging knight, Sir Etenienne, who made a living on the tournament circuit as "the Dawn Knight." René de la Croix, Etenienne's page, was Jocelyne's primary pupil and he became somewhat fixated on her, as part of his indoctrination into the philosophy of courtly love.

But when René was forced into the Order of Hermes in 1205, Jocelyne's position was put in doubt. At the tournament where René's Gift was revealed, she met Auréle and his grown son, Josse. Josse found her beauty enticing and, without his father's knowledge, arranged for a position for her in the de la Croix household. Over the next three years Josse's desire for Jocelyne intensified, and he was now old enough to ask his father for her hand in marriage. Jocelyne was not blind to all of this, and she was sure that Auréle, who was nothing if not practical, would casually dismiss Josse's intended marriage as politically impossible while, at the same time, force Jocelyne into the role of mistress instead.

So in 1208, with the Dawn Knight dead and without other options, she fled to the women's abbey at Caen. There, she took a nun's vows and eventually rose to become prioress. It was in the abbey that Jocelyne began to notice how little age was affecting her. Although now almost forty, she has all the youthful beauty of a maid. While in the abbey, she was able to more or less conceal this with her nun's habit. But she knows she cannot hide her youth forever, and when René wrote to her, she saw a way out. She has arranged for her former pupil to send an escort with whom she will flee the abbey and her vows. She intends to create a new identity for herself in Ireland.

Jocelyne is a vivacious woman with sharp features and red hair that is long and straight.
