Beatrice

Beatrice is one of the eldest of the Alpine Apprentices. She was already a young woman singing in the cathedral choir of Milan when her Enchanting Music was discovered; all the men in the congregation were obeying her songs as if they were divine commands. For a time it seemed that Beatrice might be killed by a suddenly angry city, but she was given shelter by a sympathetic Redcap until she could be passed off to Arnulf.

An exceedingly beautiful woman, Beatrice has lustrous black hair, bronzed skin, and dark soulful eyes. Her family is extremely religious and is headed by a Milanese cardinal; he considers his niece an abomination touched by infernal powers, and has ordered her family to shun her. Beatrice herself was a very devout girl until taken by the Order; now she admires the good work the Church does, but her immersion in Hermetic life has raised too many questions and she just tries to live a good life.

Apprenticed to Bronwyn filia Astrolabe, Beatrice has served as a test bed for her domina's experiments with metered magic. This is a method which makes spells easier to learn and master by using rhyme and meter. Bronwyn is something of a genius when it comes to theory, but she has no gift for composition and her own metered spells are all embarrassing doggerel. When Beatrice re-invents them herself, however, her Free Expression virtue allows her to devise incantations which are beautiful and lovely. Bronwyn is training her to be a healer and a meta-magic specialist; she relies on her Enchanting Music to accomplish many tasks that other magi do with Mentem spells. She typically casts all spells by singing and does not need to perform Hermetic gestures, but her magic requires time to function.

Beatrice's Performance Magic virtue allows her to work magic in public without an audience realizing she is casting spells. She must roll Music to do this, but her singing substitutes for the spoken words required for ordinary spells. She also has access to a new spell duration -- Performance -- but she doesn't have any spells which utilize that yet.
