Cantations
The Apprentice's Grimoire, or, The Book of the Tiro is a collection of cantations: spells no greater than the first magnitude. These spells are all suitable for a PC's seasonal Cantation XP, or they might be spontaneously cast. No complete copy of this book is known to exist; no magi would bother to copy so many low-level spells, and few apprentices have the free time. However, almost every covenant has a partial copy, cobbled together by apprentices over the decades and hidden somewhere a magus is unlikely to look. In covenants where there are multiple apprentices, the book is often unbound, its pages split up and passed around.
A Note on Sources: Many of the spells in the Tiro's Book (marked ET) were initially contributed by Erik Tyrrell and come from his "Big List of Level Three Spells," a thread on the official Ars Magica forums. Read it here. Others (marked NWG) were collected by Tyrrell and posted on his Net Wizard's Grimoire site, which you can find here. Ten (marked KR) come from kingreaper's thread "A Cantrip For Each Form." There are many spells of level 5 and below in the Ars Magica 5th Edition rulebook, and Apprentices includes more than two dozen Cantations. These spells are listed here under their Form, but are not fully repeated.

Postmortem Animal Frolicking
ReAn Level 3
R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual

R: Touch D: Momentary T: Individual
A club of ice appears in the casters hands for long enough to allow the caster one good (or pathetic) swing. The club has Init +1, Atk +2, Dfn +1 and Dmg +3. It requires a minimum Str of -2 to use and the attack is made with Single Weapon. ~ET
Sweet Taste of Apples
CrAq 4
R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Ind
Creates a bucket-sized amount of apple juice, the favorite traveling drink of Augustae Enid of Jerbiton, the spell’s inventor. (Base 2, +2 smell)
Wind that Etches

Satyr's Stare
CrCo Level 5
R: Eye D: Concentration T: Individual
Target becomes physically aroused while eye contact is maintained. This does not affect what the target thinks of the caster mentally. It is rumored that Merlin mastered this spell.

Glance of the Cat
MuCo Level 3
R: Personal D: Diameter T: Individual

Eyeblink of the Cat
MuCo Level 3
R: Touch D: Momentary T: Individual
As Eyes of the Cat adjusted to duration momentary. ~ET
Theft of Form
MuCo Level 4

The Immaculately Groomed Magus
PeCo 5 (Re)
R: Personal, D: Momentary, T: Part
This spell grooms the caster's hair and beard (if he has one), grooming him to perfection. It can be used on any part of the body as needed, can trim or shave, and always leaves them looking neat (add +3 if any Finesse roll is required for style). Constantius of Jerbiton invented this spell to compensate for a Twilight Scar that causes his hair to grow quickly and out of control. He uses this spell several times a day.
(B:3, +1 Part, Rego Requisite enhances function +1) ~NWG
The Evil Eye
PeCo 5
R: Eye, D: Momentary, T: Individual
You meet the gaze of your victim and cause a moment of excruciating pain. There is no actual damage, but it can force a Concentration roll. The caster's eyes flash a vibrant blue. ~NWG

Leaping Lilys
CrHe 3
R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual
You create a plant or plant product of up to one pace in diameter which lasts but a handful of seconds. A Perception + Finesse roll is required to place the plant with precision. Shower a pretty girl with flower petals, drop a tree stump on someone, cause a small already rocking boat to tip because of an unexpected weight, throw a bramble in front of a charging horse. ~ET
The Shield Grog's Trusted Friend
CrHe 5 (Req: Te)
R: Touch D: Sun T: Individual
"What is a Shield Grog without a shield? Whatever he is, he is no Shield Grog," quipped Antagonistae of House Tytalus when he finally invented the spell after several botched attempts to spontaneously cast it. This creates a simple wooden Round Shield, rimmed in metal. It requires an Int + Finesse roll of 9 (difficulty 6 for Easy task for mundane craftsman, +3 for magic). ~NWG
Gardener’s Touch
InHe 3
R: Personal, D: Concentration, T: Touch
By touching a plant, the caster learns what effects any actions that he or she will take in regards to the plant’s care will have on the plant. ~ET

The caster draws a circle on a wooden object and destroys the area within the circle.
(Base: 4, R: Touch +1, D: Momentary, T: Circle) ~NWG
The Well Aimed Turnip
ReHe 3
R: Touch, D: Mom, T: Ind
Commonly used as a practising exercise for the Finesse of young magi, this spell propels an object of Herbam origin from the casters hand. They may make an attack roll with that object using Perception+Finesse-3 in place of the usual dexterity+weapon skill, in order to direct it at the correct target. If used with javelins or similar items designed as thrown weapons their attack bonus does apply, as there is no magical guidance beyond the moment of throwing. ~ KR
(Base 2, +1 Touch)

Compass of the Vigilant Flame
InIg 5
R: Arcane, D: Momentary, T: Individual
This spell informs you of the exact direction and approximate range of any one fire you have an Arcane Connection to (something ignited, burned, or branded by it). The fire must not have died out since the connection was obtained, for if it does, a reignited fire counts as a separate flame (and thus the connection is lost).
(B: 1:, R: Arcane +4, D: Momentary, T: Individual) ~NWG
Flash of a Different fire
MuIg 4
R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual
The caster changes the quantity and quality of smoke, heat, and flames the target fire produces, in addition to any other qualities of the fire, for the time it takes smoke to rise from the lowest coal to the highest flame. The fire can only assume parameters that a natural fire of its size could have. Only a fire 1 pace in diameter or smaller can be affected by this spell. ~ET

The Immovable Blindfold
CrIm 5
R: Voice, D: Diam, T: Ind
Creates a visual illusion of a blindfold covering the targets eyes. Unless they have some way to pierce the illusion, this effectively renders the target blind. ~ KR
(base 1, +1 diameter, +2 voice, +1 moves with target)
Relay the Vision of the Magus
CrIm 5
R: Touch, D: Concentration, T: Individual
As you speak, a miniature image portraying the events you describe appears in front of you. It changes as you speak, and can make sounds as well. This spell is very useful for telling stories or relaying to your sodales precisely what you have seen and heard.
(Base 2, +1 Touch, +1 Concentration, +1 Changing Image) ~NWG
Eyes in the Back of the Head
InIm 3
R: Personal, D: Concentration, T: Individual
The caster can see out of a part of his body other than his eyes. Apprentices use it to peek around corners while only exposing a finger or the tip of the toe.
Notes: This spell moves a sense that the caster already possesses rather than creates a new magical sense. As such the Vision target is not appropriate for it. ~ET
A Day Saved for the Future
InIm 3
R:Personal, D: Sun, T: Individual
The caster’s memories during the duration of the spell are complete in every detail that the caster’s senses perceive even if the caster does not notice each detail (and they almost certainly won’t). Memories created by this spell will fade at a normal rate. Use of this spell with a Creo Mentem spell similar to By His Works or The Good Witness (both from HoH:TL p. 73) will allow the caster to make further observations regarding what he experienced during the duration of A Day Saved for the Future as if the caster were back in the time and place where the memories were created. ~ET
Rocket from the Sockets
InIm 3
R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual
The caster takes a single look from a point at a distance.
Notes: This spell moves a sense that the caster already possesses rather than creates a new magical sense. As such the vision target is not appropriate for it. ~ET
Awaken the Painted Image
InIm(Mu) 5
R: Touch, D: Concentration, T: Individual
A painting becomes animate and tells a short story to those present. One can see and hear the picture as the artist felt it and expressed it. A master painter's work can tell an in-depth story but a child's scribble may just express a single word. The spell does not look back in time, but instead keenly interprets the painted image. ~NWG
Dangerous Bouquet
MuIm 3
R:Touch, D: Concentration, T: Individual
The caster changes the visual sensation of a single object to be that of a different object. A long dagger could be made to appear as a bouquet of flowers. A similar spell could make a frog sound like a lute. ~ET
The Tiro's Disguise

Momentary Glimpse of the Hag
MuIm 5
R: Sight, D: Momentary, T: Part
This very simple spell causes the target’s face to appear old and wrinkled, with white eyes and jagged, black teeth, for a fraction of a second. Perception + Finesse rolls are occasionally required for a more subtle effect.

Hound’s Gift
PeIm 3

Hide in Plain Sight
PeIm 5
R: Personal, D: Concentration, T: Individual
The caster is invisible for as long as she concentrates and stands still. Moving breaks the illusion.
Flash of the Doppleganger
ReIm 5
R: Personal, D: Momentary, T: Individual
You image and voice is displaced one pace away from your actual location for the duration of a breath. To others, it will appear as if you vanished and instantly reappeared next to your original location. The image duplicates your own motions and voice, so apprentices use it to attract attention and provoke an attack, which automatically misses.
The Hopping Beer Stein
ReIm 4
R: Touch, D: Concentration, T: Individual
An object that the caster touches appears to teleport one pace away from its actual location for a fraction of a second and then return to its original resting place. ~ET

A Better First Impression
MuMe 3
R: Eye, D: Concentration T: Individual

The caster removes a minor detail from his own memory. ~ET
Equanimity Restoration
ReMe 3
R: Personal, D: Momentary T: Individual
The caster makes a momentary subtle change in his own mental state. The caster’s new attitude will remain until the situation changes it. Repeated castings of this spell can help an apprentice remain completely calm in otherwise frantic circumstances. Apprentices often resent this spell, because their masters force them to repeatedly cast it on themselves. ~ET
No Time to Slumber
ReMe 5
R: Per, D: Diam, T: Ind
For the duration of this spell you remain perfectly aware and clearheaded, regardless of your level of tiredness or confusion. Tacitus of Bonisagus found this spell very useful when dealing with the hostile mental magics of "BLOODY FAIRIES!". ~ KR
(Base 4, +1 diameter)
Terram
Cantations in Apprentices: The Poor Performer's Reward (CrTe 4), Shattering Touch (PeTe 5), The Reward Delivered. (ReTe 4)

Convenient Placement of Soil
CrTe 3
R: Touch D: Diameter T: Individual
A pile of dirt, sand, mud, or clay up to ten cubic paces in size is created by the caster. This could be used to hold a door shut, break a floor by overloading it, sink a boat in which the caster is standing, or create an earthen ramp. ~ET
Load of a Thousand Wheelbarrows
CrTe 3
R: Touch D: Momentary T: Individual (+1 size)
A pile of dirt and soil up to one-hundred cubic paces in size is created by the caster. This is a whole lot of dirt, even if it only exists for a moment. ~ET
Gift of the Roc
Cr(Re)Te 3
R: Voice D: Momentary T: Individual
Ten cubic paces of mud are created within the range of the spell. This could be used to dump a good deal of mud on a target with a successful Perception + Finesse roll. ~ET
Craftsman’s Eye
InTe 3
R: Personal D: Momentary T: Touch
The caster learns some fact about a manufactured solid object constructed of earth, stone, or metal. This fact must be a fact that a skilled artisan could determine by merely looking at the artifact.
Modified to use the magical senses rules, ArM5, p. 113-114. ~ET
Counting the Miser's Hoard
InTe 3
R: Personal D: Momentary T: Touch
Instantly tallies all the coins in a single container, stack, or pile.
Modified to use the magical senses rules, ArM5, p. 113-114. ~NWG
Obedient mud
MuTe 3
R: Touch, D: Concentration T: Individual
The caster changes one aspect of the target dirt, clay or mud. A magus could make a mud bottomed puddle drain as if it were sitting atop porous sand, or loosen/firm up the footing supplied by a distinct patch of ground that they touch, but more frequently magi use the spell make individual stains of mud fall off of their robes as if the soil on their robes were dry sand. ~ET
The Stonemason's Touch
MuTe 5
R: Touch, D: Conc, T: Ind
Changes an object of stone to clay, allowing you to make fine adjustments to its structure that would be impossible with solid stone. Popular among young sculptors of House Jerbiton, as it does not perform the art for them but rather enables their artistry to show more accurately. ~ KR
(base 3, +1 Touch, +1 Conc)
Easing the Gravedigger's Labor
PeTe 4
R: Touch, D: Momentary T: Part
The caster weakens part of an earthen floor or wall by touching it. The spell was developed by a necromancer's apprentice, who was forced to rob graves and sought to make his work easier. It can also soften the ground to capture a footprint, or weaken an earthen wall.
Practiced Defense of the Outcast Child
ReTe 3
R: Touch, D: Momentary T: Individual
The caster is warded against a particular mass of dirt, mud, or clay for a moment. An apprentice trying to deflect thrown mud must spontaneously fast-cast the spell. ~ET
The Poorly Calibrated Hourglass
ReTe 3
R: Touch, D: Concentration T: Individual
The caster controls the movement of mud, sand, or dirt in a natural way. This could be used to slow or speed up an hourglass, or ensure that an amount of soil poured onto the ground assumes a specific configuration (providing that the configuration is not unnaturally precise). ~ET
Vim
Spells in AM5: Sense of Magical Power (InVi 2), Scales of the Magical Weight (InVi 5), Sense the Nature of Vis (InVi 5)
Detecting the Master's Aura
InVi 5
R: Personal, D: Momentary T: Individual
The caster detects if any spells of fourth magnitude or higher level are active upon him. The spell's name refers to Aura of Rightful Authority, a fourth magnitude spell which is often used against stubborn apprentices.
Percieve the Faerie of Might
InVi 4
R: Sight, D: Momentary, T: Individual
You are able to sense the Faerie Might of the target to within one magnitude, but only if it is of “godly” power (Faerie Might 50 or more). Generally, the spell does not need to penetrate the creature’s Magic Resistance to detect it, but the SG may rule otherwise for specific creatures if he feels their nature would protect them from the magic (for example, a faerie doppleganger taking the form of another character).
Notes: Strictly speaking, the spell should not circumvent Magic Resistance, but this was considered more appropriate (see for example the description of the Second Sight ability, ArM5 p.67). ~NWG
Suppressing the Terrifying Turbulence
PeVi 5
R: Per, D: Mom, T: Ind
Destroys a turbulence of the caster's that has yet to coalesce, as long as it is less than level 25+a stress die. This spell must be fastcast to work rapidly enough.
It is said that Bonisagus taught this spell to his final apprentice, who was possessed of both an extremely potent gift and extremely dangerous turbulences. ~ KR
(Base 5: I chose to assume that the turbulence could be affected while still raw magic within the person, rather than requiring touch range)
Twisting the Demon's Tail
PeVi 5
R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual
This is a Cantation version of Demon's Eternal Oblivion. If the spell penetrates a demon's Magic Resistance, the demon loses 5 Might.
Countering the Simple (Form) Spell
PeVi 5
R: Voice, D: Momentary, T: Individual
This is a Cantation version of Unraveling the Fabric of (Form). It cancels the effect of a spell up to level 15, but the spell must be of the chosen Form. For example, Countering the Simple Ignem Spell will counter Flash of the Scarlet Flames or Blade of Virulent Flame (both level 15 Ignem spells) but not spells of any other Form. There are ten versions of this Cantation, one of each Form.
Ward Against Imps
ReVi 5
R: Personal, D: Sun, T: Individual
This is a Cantation version of Ward Against Demons. Demons of Infernal Might 5 or less can neither touch nor directly attack the caster.
