Sir Erwan of Leinster

Sir Erwan is the younger son of a Norman lord of Ireland; he and his family were vassals of Walter de Lacy until de Lacy's unsuccessful revolt. Now, they serve William Marshall the Younger. Erwan's family is, in fact, a lesser branch of the Marshalls.

Erwan first came to the attention of the covenant in 1220 when he arrived at Uisneach with three of his retainers and insisted on dueling the magi one at a time until death. His reason for this strange quest was simple: he had received a vision that promised the wizards of Uisneach would be the ruin of his family. He was surprised to find that some of the wizards (Polumeta and Alfeva) were women, and he proposed they select a champion. In the end, he dueled Samson, lost, and sustained nearly-mortal injuries. His squire, Andru, was able to negotiate new terms, and Erwan agreed to leave the wizards alone for a year and a day. But that was in 1220, and he has not been seen since.

Victor Autolycus, who was princeps of Cor Draconis from 1220-1227, factored Erwan's family into his schemes and Erwan was never able to convince Walter de Lacy to take action against the wizards and their magical castle. However, now that de Lacy has withdrawn from Ireland in disgrace, Erwan is pressing his new liege -- to whom he is a distant cousin -- to secure Meath by taking over the Castle of Dragons, as it is known to them, and slaying the wizards.

In the time since his first appearance, Sir Erwan has grown somewhat older but remains in excellent health. If anything, his skill in battle has grown, and his accumulated wealth has allowed him to purchase excellent arms and armor from France. His father is now nearing 70 and has been overcome by the hereditary madness which plagues the family. Nevertheless, he clings to life and Erwan's older brother manages the family holdings.

Erwan is still served by his loyal retainers, the twins Sir Louis and Sir Rudolph, and is seldom without a pair of mounted serjeants to round out his fighting retinue. His former squire, Andru, was recruited into Victor's spy network, was knighted, and left Erwan's service.

The origin of Sir Erwan's vision remains unknown.
