Hares: Whiplash
Start Time: 14:30
Start Location: Negishi
Weather: Rain
Runners: 10
Scribe: Cliff Hanger
Typhoon 18 was approaching, rain was falling since early morning, and trains were delayed which hindered an on time start. Harriette “Whiplash” was waiting patiently at Negishi Station for the 10 daring hounds (Pasconti, Bisconti, Sweetie, Dragon Fly, Fuller Air, Ass Licker, Good on Top, Platinum Pork, Pussy Pad and Cliff Hanger) who were prepared to weather the storm for some refreshing cold beer that awaited us.
As we gathered in a circle to start the hash, there was no chalk talk because the ground was too wet for that. Then how do you lay a trail without chalk, hash or other markings you ask? Our genius hare provided us with a paper map of the hash trail which was photo-copied and/or picture snapped with cell phones before hounds away. Hounds followed the map and headed off for an interesting trail. After 3 minutes of running, we already missed the first turn. I knew this was not going to be as easy as it looked. The hounds viewed the map and immediately got back on track. However, this happened more times than not so we stopped numerous times to check map to verify we were on correct trail. Lessons learned: reading paper maps in the pouring rain ruins paper quality after only 30 minutes. Thank goodness for iPhone technology and google maps which kept us on true trail.
With the absence of hounds yelling On-On, no checkpoints, no true trail or bad trail markings, we still were able to create our own self-imposed “check backs” which made the trail more interesting. The trail took us through Negishi Shinrin Park, which use to be a horse racetrack for over 80 years, were the grandstand ruins still stand at the back of the park. Honmoku Sancho Park was the next landmark with its high summit that allowed us a good view of the rain cloud covered city. Up through Yamate Bluff, the trail ended at Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen). After an 11K hashless trail, the hare was waiting under a roofed canopy with ice cold beer and a surprise bottle of Crown Royal Canadian Whisky (Maple Finished). Delicious!! 4H finished whole bottle in record time. This is why we hash in rain, typhoon or snow!! And yes, it rained non-stop.
During the circle, our returning hashers (Sweetie and Dragonfly) displayed to the group shirts they purchased for the August Hashers who also weathered the storm. Shirt reads: I hashed the #72 “The Cataclysmic” 10 Aug 2004 On-On. If you ran the August Hash, please pick up your shirts. Now ‘we’ are waiting for our special design T-shirts!!
The On-On-Ons or On After was located in Yokohama’s Motomachi International pub named Laser Rush. There were more than enough food and beer to satisfy our palates. The owners and customers were very friendly. Nice way to end a wet evening!! Did I mention it was raining all day!!
