Our adventure began before we even gathered as a group with a swinging good time on the Shonan monorail. Veterans and virgins (of both the monorail and of hashing) mingled in the brisk mid-day air with smiles already in full effect.

While FullerAir polished off his usual pre-hash strong zero, our hares presented us with a smart presentation they had prepared. Details of the hash were clearly spelled out; although it seems, perhaps purposely, they did not divulge the details of the sinister challenge that lay ahead.

And so off we went shuffling to warm the blood and start the hunt for virgin trail!

Into the woods, through a farm, over the mountain and through more woods…to an unknown On-On we were to go!?

The check backs proved to be a bear for the pack up front and especially for Ass Licker who desperately tried to catch the group (oops someone didn’t mark that one…). Nevertheless ON-ON we ran! Up and down, up and down, and up and down again with wonderful vistas awaiting us at the top of every steep climb.

When motivational words written atop of a marathon-like stair climb were found there was the slightest hope that beer may be near! But alas more hills, more turns, and more stairs awaited us before the trail finally wound down through a wonderful neighborhood and back onto flat ground.

Finally emerging from the hills, we were rewarded with what appeared to be only a nice flat stretch along the coast left. With the beer near indication found, we could nearly taste success in finishing the trail…that was until we turned the corner to discover yet another set of stair...

In true hasher fashion though we dashed on and up! and to our delight it was confirmed that BEER was indeed NEAR!! Each hasher was greeted with warm cheer, an abundance of cold beer, delightful mulled wine, and as always with Bisconti’s wonderful baked treats.

After the normal post hash revelries, we meandered a short distance to the On-On where we found ourselves tucked away in a cozy little restaurant upstairs enjoying a fabulous array of some traditional and not so traditional Japanese fare (popcorn ). Wine and beer flowed generously; many laughs and stories were shared; and short bathroom breaks were greeted with a boisterous cheer. As we shuffled our way to the little train line back to Kamakura we believe we may have set the record for the most boisterous train car in the history of Japan.

Our hats off to the hares for a thoughtfully planned, brilliantly marked, challenging, and imaginative trail that will be remembered, not only for the brutal climbs and descents, but for the fabulous views and spot-on ON-ON along the beautiful Shonan coastline.

So three cheers for the hares and to all who were in attendance and made for another truly memorable Sunday for us spent with the Hayama Has House Harriers; we look forward to many more Sunday-Funday’s with you all:)
