It was a beautiful day after what seemed like a month of rain. The arc was started but it is now in storage for the next few weeks.
The troops arrived at Zushi-station and this time there were no walkers so the run started with runners on time. The Hayama gang were pleasantly surprised that the Sumo Hash joined us in great numbers. It was well timed as numbers were required for the beach invasion later in the day.
The Hare did a good job of making the hills as difficult as he could. While a few of the troops broke down on the way up they all made it to the top. The twisty road down to Zushi Marina was exciting as the cars and cyclists roared passed. This is where things got interesting. We found out that some of the Sumo Hashers like to mark their own trails as they go, marking over or near the marks left by the Hare. When this scribe caught up to the back markers there was confusion in the troops. I suggested we go back to the last known marker and start again. I was met with a strange look as the Sumo stars looked me in the eye and said “But those are my marks, not sure where the last mark from the Hare is!”
After some time it was all sorted out and we were back on the hunt. After a nice run around the marina we proceeded our own way back up. For those who found the original trail but were not in the leading group they missed the opportunity to go to the viewing point. For all others, well, they missed the trail didn’t they!
When we descended on to the beach we passed the Hare as he drove in the other direction. Where is the beer we all thought! Well, what beer was had was in the car going North but we were all going South! Eventually we made it to the beer stash and after a dash to the store there was plenty of beer for all. As the runners relaxed to a nice sunset with beers in hand it was noted that this run was carried out on the anniversary of D-Day, a great time to have a beach landing!
A series of Down-Downs were allowed as it is a Sumo tradition and they made up 85% of the runners. Plenty of abuse was lashed out at all before we all headed off to La Cantina for pizza and more beer! Being the last one out of the restaurant I noticed more than one person needing assistance and yes indeed the runners looked like wounded soldiers dragging their asses away from the beach!
