Today’s Hayama Hash started at the West exit of the JR Ofuna train station on the outskirts of Kamakura. When I arrived at Ofuna station at around 2:30PM and left the west exit, about 10 members such as Santa-Maria and Cliffhanger were already gathering. Just Coming was on the same train coming in. The meeting place was easy to find. Travisty and Merrie were late and started the race late. Since the meeting place was very close to the entrance, we moved away from the exit to gather in a circle.

When the start time approached, Lolita Bastard provided the some of the details of the course. He told us there would only be one check back (CB) and no beer stop (boo)! I was glad to hear only one CB. We were told the Turkey route would be about 10 km and the Eagle route approximately 12 km.

We started the race at exactly 3 PM. On time races are always good! Everyone started together and gradually spaced out. The first check point came early in the run, which was good because more people can participate in figuring out the true trail. The options were a steep incline or up stairs. The choice was the stairs and up we went. Our check back was at the top. Since we had many people together still, we were able to quickly find the true trail. The trail continued past the Mokusenji temple. It was nice to run along a trail for the first kilometer. The trail then had us running on concrete in housing areas. Between our third and forth kilometer we ran between the Kamakura City Sekiya Elementary School and the Kanagawa Kenritsu Kamakurayogo School. Just past the schools we crossed hwy 312. We ran along the road until crossing hwy 402 and past another Buddist Temple. We crossed hwy 312 again at the Mitsuidanchi Entrance. In the next area it was mostly residential houses. By this time Safety Last had added many additional direction arrows to the route. Just Cuming and Cliffhanger kept crossing my husband Paul and my path. Cliffhanger would take a short break and walk. Once he started running again, he would pass us. There was a water stop along the way; I didn’t take note of the distance in the route. We did not stop since we were carrying our own water. We saw Safety Last for the last time during the race. We saw him use up his first piece of chalk and started on his second. We thanked him for adding arrows. The route pasted Code Poo’s Shop with a sign pointing in the direction. It was pretty cool to incorporate the shop. This was six and half kilometers into the route. The next major point on the route was the Eagle-Turkey split. This is where Cliffhanger and me parted. Paul and I chose the Eagle route on the heels of Just Cuming.

We came into the home stretch and many hashers were enjoying a beverage. There was some good healthy food, breads, and chips. I bought two-dozen chocolate chip cookies for the forth time. People seem to enjoy fresh baked cookies. At the circle we did a few different activities. After critiquing the hares, we called virgins to the center. Each had to drink down a small cup of beer. We also brought in hashers who were not wearing hash gear. I was wearing the Sake House t-shirt that I had bought in August so I did not have to go into the circle, but Paul did. They also had to drink down a small cup of beer. After the circle was over, people pitched in to clean up.

OnOn was a 484 Café restaurant. We walked the last kilometer to the restaurant. Lolita Bastard had to mark the trail to the restaurant since it was so far away. We arrived just after 6 PM. Santa Maria did not go because the café did not serve wine. The OnOn cost was 4000 yen. The café offered four types of craft beer. During the OnOn several group pictures were taken. No hash names were decided at this dinner. Everyone seemed to have a good time. The food was a little slow coming out; however, everyone seemed to enjoy the beer. Just after 8 PM we left the OnOn since it takes over an hour and a half to get home on the train. A large group left at the same time.
