What a glorious afternoon for the 4th anniversary Hayama Hash House Harriers run, aka the “Deva Vu” run.
Harriers met at 2.45pm sharp on Morito beach, not far from Hayama Goyotei (the Emperor's Summer Palace). Run No. 49 for the hash club that was formed four years ago over an evening of drinks, during a solving of the world’s problems. Kim Will Run and Santa Maria sold the commemorative t-shirts, then Sweetie gave the briefing, following which we were off running along the beach to the first check point.
The first check had many people guessing and created a good bottleneck to hold the group together. Soon though the trail was re-discovered and once again we were running along the beach, re-enacting a scene from Chariots of Fire (well, I was!) However, running in the sand was the easy part and before we knew it we were on an incline that took us up through a park and provided us with a wonderful, clear view of Fuji-san, way off in the distance. The incline continued and led to a trail that went up, then up, then up, then up. Up, up, up and up we went, climbing a path that cut through the forest. I remember Sweetie advising us during the briefing that we would climb three hills during the afternoon and I was hoping that the next two were not as steep - of course, that was wishful thinking, because this was the anniversary hash in Hayama and if you’re not on the beach, you’re in the hills. Crusader was long gone - he must have flown up the first hill - and the following pack was led by Time’s Up, Good On Top and Asslicker. The weather was perfect; the sun was out and the sky was clear, the air was fresh, but still. It was a good day to be hashing through Hayama’s hills. We climbed hill number two, then hill number three - each one seeming steeper than the previous one. It was a great work out for the buttocks and the thighs and the views on top were superb. As a hash trail, there was little difficulty in following the route and the hashers were happy with their day in the country. The trail eventually led back to the coast and the beach were it all started on this A to A run. Hashers returned for the on-on between one to two hours after they had started and joined the group to share their stories over a beer or two. No-one was lost, although some stragglers did crawl in under the cover of dark.
After the circle, we walked down the road to the restaurant for the on-on-on. Most hashers joined for the seafood meal to celebrate the anniversary and continue the fun. All in all it was a wonderful occasion.
