LITERATURE REVIEW USING ATLAS.ti 8 WINDOWS
Strategy:
Research
Form your own team
Choose the type of research you like
- self funded - fastest and easiest
1. fundamental research: Basic research, also called pure research or fundamental research, is scientific research aimed to improve scientific theories for improved understanding or prediction of natural or other phenomena.
2. exploratory research:Exploratory Research is research conducted for a problem that has not been clearly defined. It often occurs before we know enough to make conceptual distinctions or to posit an explanatory relationship. Exploratory research helps determine the best research design, data-collection method and selection of subjects.
3. prototype research:A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or learned from. It is a term used in a variety of contexts, including semantics, design, electronics, and software programming.a prototype research focuses on developing a prototype it is a prototype-based study .
- funded research recommend aras, focus on teaching and learning:
conference fee covered, publish with sponsorship, report fee covered - online uitm aras application
Scope: evidence-based practices which involve various fields in teaching and learning. The nature of the research must be innovative and is able to bring about significant improvement in teaching and learning.
Amount: RM5,000 – RM20,000 for a maximum of 2 years
- go for rags, b4 you are in dm52
-go for frgs
- multidisciplinary
Honour, respect and value your own research, do not look down on your research
- self confidence
Tasks given to each member according to strength: writing, presenting
Workshop for proposal writing - inform us if you need one
The importance of literature review for theoretical support
- read more, write more, think more, edit more
- the more you know about the topic, the more you can contribute
- backbone of knowledge, what have been studied, what are being studied
- what you can do
- how have been done
- discuss, critics, discourse, not just copy and paste
- the depth of your reading shows how serious you are in that area, 读你, du ni
- intellectual, xuezhe, the learners, the reader
- look for areas of study, latest and feasible search, e, g, mobile learning
Procedure
- proposal writing, if need research fund
- submit proposal to rmi
- meeting for presentation for internal grant, or online application
- once approved, start your research
- present papers or submit for journal
- submit intermittent report - monthly progress report
- finalize final report
- submit final report - follow the format of the sponsoring bodies
- close file
Not being trained
- Equip for research and writing
- attending training is not the solution
- start your research here and now
- no perfect research and writing, just do it
points to ponder on proposal writing
•Make sure all instructions are properly followed.
• Make sure all boxes are ticked.
• Partner with a local government agency like MPOB, MIMOS… if you have
• Make sure the executive summary (or anything on the first two or three pages) can be understood by a layman. • Try something like: Ask your friend to read your proposal for three minutes and see what are her comments
General points in the proposal that request for funding
• Is the problem well‐formulated and presented? – Objectives and methodology
• Are the objectives quantifiable and measurable? – Objectives
• Why do this research? Why is it important to be funded? – Executive summary and background
• Where is the research gap? What is the contribution? – Executive summary, background and literature review • Is the proposer qualified and capable to do the work? – Literature review
• Is the proposal focused and organised? – Methodology
Example (Objectives)
- must be clear and answerable in your chapter 4 and 5
- must be attractive to the panels
• To study ...
• To investigate the use of X application compared to conventional Y
• To research the integration of X‐based instruction into the teaching of Y
• To design an instructional method for the teaching of Y
• To evaluate the performance of a X‐based system on the teaching of Y
• To determine the performance of a programme in the teaching of Y
Go in depth for an area, you can become expert of that area
- you will be invited to be reviewer (paid one, journal pertanika, upm)
- mqa panel (paid for reviewing program)
- Co supervisor for master, phd
- belief that your research is of value: invited to Taiwan, all fully sponsored
Sharpen and heighten ur statistical skill
- do not just satisfy with percentage, means
- go for more sophisticated advanced statistics analysis
- may consult statistics expert
- build strong statistics skills, good for presentation of finding
-may Google search for some statistics terminology and examples
Topics for research
- look around you
- Your teaching, four language skills, speaking, listening, writing, reading - perpetual topics
- English programmes
- instructional technology
-frgs English research topics: evaluation of English programmes in school level
e.g., Exploring Malaysian Based Intercultural Knowledge and Behaviour among Secondary School Students through English Language Intercultural Reading Programme (ELIRP)
find the research trends, e.g. mobile assisted language learning
may refer to journal storage to view the available journal of that particular area, e.g. mobile assisted language learning
Common comments (and reasons for rejection)
• Unclear and unfocused proposal.
• The objectives are immeasurable and unfocused.
• The proposal is a routine application of a known technique or research.
• The proposer is not qualified or capable.
• The proposal is not of national interest.
• The proposal is poorly presented.
• Unrealistic and overly ambitious within the given time frame.
• Poor English. - this is extremely insulting for English lecturers
• Ticked the wrong boxes.
Contributions
- finding, no fabrication to your data, accept them as they are
- views, at least one good view will be good
- implications, applications, at least one
Having said all that…
• Getting grants is an integral part of being an academic. It is the rule of the game.
• Rejection is part of the package of being an academic.
• Keep trying, and we’ll do whatever to support those who try. - get help and assistance from our ajk
• You’ll succeed eventually. - for sure, guarantee, if you persist
Time is needed to produce seasoned researcher
Boldness is required to initiate study
- try your very best

Problem
Lost interest
Psychology hindrance
- shy
- sense of inferiority 妄自菲薄, wangzi feibo
-we are equally good
No time
Got promoted
Too calculative
Paper work - too tedious
Burdened what to do
Lack of knowledge on research methodology, statistics
- may request for any workshop
- make full use of available training
-SURVEY AND VALIDATION OF INSTRUMENTS USING RASCH ANALYSIS, etc
-request through aileen, the heroine of training, one ajk show, thumb up
No sense of success
- success is not as difficult as what you think
- efforts and hardworking
- work smart and hard, e.g. ap dr azman che mat
Procrastination
- do not wait
- start now
- grab the opportunity to get promoted when the door is open
- anticipate more ap, not just senior lecturer, even full professors in uitmt
Eye hand yan vs shou, high low, gao vs di
-yangao shougao, nobel prize research
-yangao, shoudi, typical research
-yandi, shougao, keen researcher, qinneng bu zhuo, hard working count
-yandi shoudi, produce nothing
Know know zhidao
-do not know that you do not know: unrealistic research
-know what you do not know, e.g., Einstein, produce quality exploratory research
-know what you know, e.g., 玛丽·居里(Marie Skłodowska Curie,1867-1934年)世称“居里夫人” ,able to produce application research
-do not know that you know, confirmatory research, not sure, not confirm
No benefit - definitely wrong
-be critical
- promotion: the best part
- extra income: reviewer, mqa panel, commercialisation of products, consultation
No research culture
- we are going to nurture
- set target, kpi for yourself
- enjoy research and writing, xiangshou, not renshou (bear with)
- we are lecturer, not teachers
- difference: we do research and we write, we should be proud of
- know our strength, let it shine
