Lidsville Music

Music wasn't quite as pivotal to "Lidsville" as it was to "H.R. Pufnstuf" and "The Bugaloos," but there was still plenty of it -- Les Szarvas, who'd written all the songs for the Pufnstuf series, returned to pen new songs. Butch Patrick entered the show telling producers he couldn't sing, so he wasn't called on to do it often. Most songs were sung by Billie Hayes, Charles Nelson Reilly and the good hat people, and as on "Pufnstuf," the general length of the songs was under a minute. In Hoodoo's home, there was the resident "Hat Band" who'd routinely interrupt scenes with their annoying songs -- which were usually all screechingly performed to the same melody. Tonsilini the top hat only spoke in operatic song... and seems to have been blatantly ripped off by Adam Sandler's for his recurring "SNL" sketch, Opera Man.

However, Butch Patrick did eventually record a few songs. In 1972, Metromedia (probably most notable for being Bobby Sherman's label) got the idea to cut a bubblegum record with Patrick backed by the psych-rock band Sugarloaf, so he hung out with them for a time but ultimately realized he was unable to devise an act. Two singles were issued: "I.O.I.O." / "I Want Sugar All the Time," and "Gypsy Rainbow." Patrick later admitted that he didn't sing the songs, and claimed that the whole debacle surrounding his album is what put Metromedia's music division out of business.

In 1982, Patrick tried to reignite his career by recording "What Ever Happened to Eddie?," a cheesy novelty song which was featured on MTV's "The Basement Tapes." The 45 was backed with "Little Monsters," an infectiously catchy little ditty about bacterial parasites.

In 2007, Patrick took one more trip to the studio to record yet another novelty song called "It's Only Halloween." Released as a single on i-tunes and the like, the issue was followed by a pair of (improved) dance remixes and a DVD featuring the music video.

Also noteworthy, in 1995 Marilyn Manson's released the song "Dope Hat," which heavily sampled recorded dialogue from "Lidsville," on his hit album "Smells Like Children." A different version of the song had previously been issued on his lesser-known first album "Portrait of An American Family," and a few remixes were later released.

SONG LYRICS

OPENING THEME

In the middle of the summer, in the middle of a park

There began a great adventure for a boy whose name was Mark

He had come to see the magic man, along with all the children and

'Twas so began the day that Mark was never to forget

He performed all sorts of miracles, and Mark was so impressed

That when the time arrived to go he lagged behind the rest

Then quietly he did return, the secret of the hat to learn

But everyone had gone away and darkness filled the set (or "Darkness held its breath?!")

The moment that he touched the hat the room began to glow

And as he put it down and ran the hat began to grow, and grow,

And grow, and grow, and grow, and grow, and grow, and grow,

And grow.... and grow!

He was stunned and he was fascinated, still he had to see

There was something deep inside the hat; what could that something be?

Then cautiously each step he took, he climbed up on the brim to look,

And all at once the hat began to shake, and rock

Look out!

Falling, falling, into the hat he fell

Spinning, turning, whirling, twirling

Down, down

And when he looked into the skies, he couldn't believe his ears or eyes

Lidsville is the Koo-Koo-Kookiest

Lidsville is the Ki-Ki-Kickiest

Lidsville is the Groo-Groo-Grooviest

Lidsville is the living end, friend

If you get a chance to go-go there, you'll be glad you did,

'cause Everybody who goes to Lidsville really flips his lid!

LIDSVILLE CLOSING THEME

Everybody there wears a hat

Everybody knows where it's at

In the land of hats, that's Lidsville

You can find it on magic maps

Where the mountains wear mountain caps

Lined with welcome mats, that's Lidsville

I've seen people put on hats

And then they tie or pin 'em

In Lidsville there's no need for that

Because they live right in 'em

So if you bump into a bonnet

With ears and eyes and nose upon it

Nope, you haven't gone bats

That's Lidsville!

Liddy-liddy-liddy-ville

Not to be confused with Nitty-gritty-ville

The land of living hats, that's Lidsville!

UP THERE

The world is filled with ladders

You find them all the time

The only trouble is ladders

Are like hills you've got to climb

But if you've got it in you

You'll step by step continue

Until one day you've finally reach the dome

Cuz up there

Lies happiness

And up there

You'll find success

Cuz up there is a wonderful place

Called home

IT'S SO MUCH FUN BEING ROTTEN

Tickled, I get when I hear people weeping

I love to hold their noses tight whenever they are sleeping

I always stick my foot out when I see a person leaving

It's so much fun being rotten!

Goosebumps, I to see a creature suffer

And if the road is rough for them, I love to make it rougher

I hear a pretty nightingale and think, "How could I stuff her?"

It's so much fun being rotten!

I have so many wonderful friends like you and you and you

And the wonderful thing about you all is you're all rotten too!

Abject, I get if I can kick another

I see a boy play hookey and I run to tell his mother - Hey, ma!

I love to stick mosquitos in molases 'til they smother

May all my good deeds be forgotten

I'd rather be good and rotten

That's me, kids

I'LL SHOW 'EM

They think I'm dumb

I'll show 'em

My day will come

I'll show 'em

I tell them what to do but they never do it

What good is good advice if no one's gonna listen to it?

Well, I'm gonna split

I'll show 'em

I've got the grit

I'll show 'em

They'll all be sorry, they'll wake up some day

And find this kind of game is one that two guys can play

And I won't be there to give them what they would dig anyway

I'll show 'em, I'll show 'em, I'll show 'em!

MR. BIG

You can make a lot of promises

Then afterwards renege, Mr. Big

You can say you want to help them

Though you really don't give a fig, Mr. Big

When they finally elect you

Who can travel near and far?

And how can they detect you

When they never know where you are?

You can start out as a mayor

And then wind up as a star

If you're clever, Mr. Big

You dig?

I LOVE YOU MORE

More than Rip Van Winkle loved his beddy-by

More than Jackie Horner loved his fruity pie

More than icky Mary Poppins loved to fly

I love you more, I love you more, I love you more!

No way

More than Mother Hubbard loved her skinny mutt

More than Hans and Gretel loved their kooky hut

More than the lady in the shoe loved... you know what!

I love you more!

I love you more!

I love you more!

I love you more!

I love you more!

That's enough already!

I love you more!

HAPPY SWEET 1600

Have a happy sweet sixteen hundredth

It's your day today

We hope that you'll remember us all

When you get old and gray

For every year we have planned to put

A candle on the cake

And when you light the candles

Wow, what a bonfire that will make!

But now we wish you the best of luck

And as we said before

Have a happy sweet sixteen hundredth

And sixteen hundred more

EVERY DAY IS PARTY TIME

Give us a reason for a party

Any kind of reason at all

We're always ready to throw some confetti

Toot our horn and have ourselves a ball

Welcome home or bon voyage or happy hello

All we need's a reason and away we all go

So keep in mind, honsey

That life can be funsy

If every day is party time!

GONNA HAVE PEACE

No more running for cover

No more having to hide

No more shaking within our hats

Whenever we go outside

For peace has come to Lidsville

With love and joy and laughter

And we'll all live together in Lidsville

Happily ever after

Gonna have peace, peace

We're gonna have peace, peace...

HOO-DOO

Who makes women's hearts go twitter?

Hoo-Doo!

Who makes husbands all turn bitter?

Hoo-Doo!

Who makes magic like Houdini

Only wish he could?

Cuz he does it twice as good

Hoo-Doo! Hoo-Doo!

Hoo-Doo, that's who!

FAMOUS HATS

Here's to the famous hats of yesterday

We humbly tip our hats to you

Your famous deeds will never fade away

For history will remember and we'll remember too

Hats! Hats! Famous hats!

Davy Crockett in a coonskin cap

Fought to put Texas on the map

With the bravest of men he fought the foe

And gave his life at the Alamo

Hats! Hats! Famous hats!

Betsy Ross with a needle and thread

Made the bonnet upon her head

She worked for days with a burlap bag

And made her country's very first flag

Hats! Hats! Famous hats!

Abraham Lincoln in his top hat

Saw the slaves and said, "Better stop that!"

Wrote a letter to the entire nation:

Emancipation proclamation!

Here's to the famous hats of yesterday

We humbly tip our hats to you

Your famous deeds will never fade away

For history will remember and we'll remember too

IF YOU AIN'T GOT FRIENDS

A magic carpet ride can take you there

But there ain't any better than it anywhere

If you ain't got you know what

Ain't got I know what

You ain't got friends

You gotta have friends

You can be living in a great big house

And not be any richer than a poor church mouse

If you ain't got you know what

Ain't got I know what

You ain't got friends

You gotta have friends

Someone you can talk with

Take a little walk with

Someone you can joke with

Go to when you're broke with

Someone you can laugh with

Share a half-and-half with

Someone you can care with

Call and he'll be there with

Friends are a blessing you can count upon

Hermits really don't know what they're missing out on

Cuz they ain't got you know what

Ain't got I know what

They never learned that happiness depends

On the simple fact you've gotta have friends

MOMMY BLUES

I've got those, "Where-did-I-go-wrong?

What-should-I-have-done?" broken-hearted mommy blues

I've got those can't believe my ears

Could this be the son who was gonna fill his daddy's shoes?

Instead of robbin' banks and playin' rotten pranks

He's going straight and now he's one of those blankety-blanks

Is this any kind of way to show a mother his thanks?

I've got those, "Where-did-I-go-wrong-with-that-rotten-little-boy

He's gotta be kidding!

Mommy blues

One more time!

I've got those, "Where-did-I-go-wrong-with-that-rotten-little-boy,

Brokenhearted mommy blues!

I-I-I-I-I-I-O

I-O

You know I love getting up in the morning

When the sun first strikes the trees

(Trees)

All the morning birds that sing above

Still bring back memories

Of a girl who stood beside me

When the rights I did were wrong

But she went back down the river

Just when I thought I could be strong

When I thought I could be strong

So I sing

I.O.

I-I-I-I-I-I-O

She never told me why she left me

But the letter said goodbye

Now my mornings are for wondering

And my nights to reason why

Why a stranger comes to steal a love

Of a girl I had to hold

But she went back down the river

Just when I thought I could be strong

When I thought I could be strong

So I sing

I WANT SUGAR ALL THE TIME

By Butch Patrick...

(Or Sugarloaf... or someone else...)

I want sugar all the time

It's yours and mine

If we can get it together

We can have our cake and eat it to

Me and you

Forever and ever

Sugar

Old man

Works his life away

Dyin'

Just to get his pay

And Friday when he gets some money

He spends it all

For just a taste of honey

I want sugar all the time

It's yours and mine

If we can get it together

We can have our cake and eat it to

Me and you

Forever and ever

Sugar

I won't take

The bitter with the sweet

I can't believe

If I can't feel the beat

Get yourself in tune with me

And you'll find out

How sweet your life can be

I want sugar all the time

It's yours and mine

If we can get it together

We can have our cake and eat it to

Me and you

Forever and ever

Sugar

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar

(I want sugar)

I want sugar all the time

It's yours and mine

If we can get it together

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO EDDIE?

By Eddie (Butch Patrick) and the Monsters

What ever happened to Eddie?

I'm the kid from Mockingbird Lane

What ever happened to Eddie?

Did I freak or go insane?

You might wonder why I have a dragon for a pet;

Well, he's just there to keep me company on the set

What ever happened to Eddie?

I'm the kid with the mixed up brain.

What ever happened to Eddie?

Yes, I'm the kid with the pointed ears

What ever happened to Eddie?

After all these many years

If you dare peek through my shaded window screen

You'd turn so white at seeing so much green

What ever happened to Eddie?

I'm the kid from Mockingbird la-ane!

And the ghouls go...

What ever happened to Eddie?

I got up and split from school.

What ever happened to Eddie?

But I always kept my cool.

I spend my nights just howling at the moon

Or hanging out in a creepy black lagoon.

What ever happened to Eddie?

LITTLE MONSTERS

By Eddie (Butch Patrick) and the Monsters

I've got an itching, burning feeling

A strange sensation, what could it be?

Under the microscope something's growing

There's little monsters crawling on me!

They're on the floor, they're in the air,

On my clothes and in my hair!

Little monster, little monsters, little monsters, ahhh-oooo

Tiny creatures on my TV

Itsy bitsy animals eating my food

Tiny creatures - don't you see them?

Little monsters, what should I do?

They're building cities and shopping malls

It may become a small world after all

Little monster, little monsters, little monsters, ahhh-oooo

Tiny creatures play with me at bedtime

Small animals under my sheets

Tiny creatures wake me up at midnight

Little monsters won't let me get to sleep

Nobody listens, no one cares

They're multiplying everywhere!

Little monster, little monsters, little monsters, ahhh-oooo

Ahhh-oooo,A hhh-whoooo

Ahhh-oooo, ahhh-whooooo

Ahhh-oooo, ahhh-whooooo

Little monsters on me

Ahhh-whoooo

Little monsters crawling on me

Ahhh-whoooo

Little monsters on me

Ahhh-whoooo

Little monsters crawling on me

Ahhh-whoooo

Little monsters on me

Ahhh-whoooo

Little monsters crawling on me

Ahhh-whoooo

IT'S ONLY HALLOWEEN

Hi, this is Butch Patrick, Eddie Munster to you Munster fans, and it's only Halloween!

There's scary witches here and there

And silent murmurs everywhere

Don't be afraid, it's only Halloween

With children playing trick or treat

You recognize no one you meet

Don't be afraid, it's only Halloween

The wind is whistling through the trees

A weird and eery tune

And if you look real close

You'll see a mask on Mr. Moon

The sweetest girlies wear a scowl

And even little puppies howl

Don't be afraid, it's only Halloween

There's goblins running all around

And scary witches to be found

Don't be afraid, it's only Halloween

With children playing trick or treat

You recognize no one you meet

Don't be afraid, it's only Halloween

The wind is whistling through the trees

A weird and eery tune

And if you look real close

You'll see a mask on Mr. Moon

With silent murmurs everywhere

Suspense and mystery fill the air

Don't be afraid, it's only Halloween
