Carrie

You know the name Stephen King... but there was once a time when nobody did. That would be in the days before "Carrie" was published and subsequently unleashed upon the world in Brian DePalma's classic film. As a result, by the '80s everyone knew who he was. The story of the picked-on kid getting revenge on their peers wasn't new then (the eerily similar flick "Horror High" was released the same year the book was published), but though it seems rife with cliches today, the 1976 film was absolutely groundbreaking and launched a titlewave of rip-offs, homages, parodies, imitations, musicals, remakes and even a sequel. So, although it's a mainstream classic, Carrie had such an overwhelming impact on the world that it's fitting of the moniker "cult oddity."
