This passage of scripture is a cornerstone of many Christian denominations. Yet, it might be confusing to some who read it at first light. It is true that a Christian is not under the law anymore and sin no longer has dominion over your life. You are free from sin and the law. Sin is a curse and a bondage. The law was given to man by God to prevent him from sinning, but in itself, the law becomes a burden made by man. So, since you are a Christian, you are no longer under the law but under grace. That does not mean you will intentionally break the law. Because you love God and will try to keep all of God's laws, signifies a true respect and love for the salvation that God has given. As well, you will also try not to sin, because you love God. The love of God has freed you as a Christian from both sin and the law. Yet, if you break the law and sin, you are no longer under the penalty of death. Because sin came into the world, death is the result of that sin. The trouble for men with the laws as given by God is that no one is able to keep them perfectly. The only person who walked the Earth with that capacity was Jesus Christ. Being born again and living in his Holy Spirit means that you will always yearn to follow his teachings and keep his words in your heart.
“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

This passage is the very essence of the Lord's Supper. The words of Christ are his body, his flesh, and his blood. If you take them into your heart and keep them then you are of his spirit. You are remembering him in all of his teachings if you keep his sayings. God is with us and guiding us.
“He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.”

This was Jesus foretelling of the last supper before he was to be crucified. After he said this to the group of people that were with him at the time, many fell away and did not follow him anymore. Because they could not accept this saying, that his words were his flesh and blood, his spirit and life, they did not understand the real meaning of salvation. This is what we as Christians are doing when we observe the ritual of the Lord's Supper. We take on his spirit and life by keeping in remembrance his words within our hearts. As a Christian, you cannot be ritually saved only by participating in the Lord's Supper or taking Communion. It is symbolic of that great commandment that Mary the mother of Christ told to the people at the wedding when Jesus turned the water into wine, "Whatever he says unto you, do it." (Keep all his words within your heart.)
“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

If you only take Communion as some churches do every service and expect to be rewarded in heaven, then you are greatly missing the life that Christ would have us to lead. His words are spirit and they are life. His words are the Communion with God.
To be born again and enter into the kingdom of God, a Christian wants to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, even unto death and crucifixion. Take up your cross daily and follow Christ. You do this by keeping his words and making them a part of your life. As a Christian, we are no longer under the law but under grace. Yet, this is the great mystery. Some will understand it to mean that they can commit any sin and break any law, but the opposite is true. As a Christian, you are bound to do all the things that God wants you to do. Christians commit sin all the time in error, either by being severely tempted or even by sins of omission. Many times you will commit sins by not trying hard enough to follow Christ. Yet, the Holy Spirit will pull you back and lead you on in another direction that will help you to understand and recover from sin. Pray always for God to lead you into the paths of righteousness that his son Jesus Christ has given us to follow.
