Have you guys ever thought about which after school sports clubs we should add at MS 890? After surveying, it's clear many of us want more options beyond our current volleyball team. Most notably, basketball, badminton, and soccer
are in high demand. Out of the 24 sixth gradersI talked to, 15 want basketball, 10 voted for badminton, and there’s a growing interest in soccer. That's why, through our Newspaper Club, I'm pushing to start clubs for all three sports.
So NIA, as you guys know, already has a basketball club, but some kids can’t stay that long after school. So I'm trying to get us a basketball club that is from 2:40 to 4:30 and is part of the school. Basketball offers great benefits; it’s a popular sport where you dribble, shoot, and learn various techniques. It helps improve coordination and team skills. Plus, it’s just plain fun to play with friends after school. So with this knowledge, I am trying to convince Mr. Enny, the basketball studio coach or find another teacher. This team could compete in tournaments with other schools, like in volleyball.
A coach is also needed for badminton In case you want to join badminton but you don't really know what it is, badminton is a game where you serve kind of like volleyball and you have to keep this small thing called a birdie off the ground, but you don’t use your hands; you use a racket. There are many different ways to serve. I'm pretty good at badminton, and I know multiple ways to serve. Badminton is also about working together with your teammates.
Soccer is another sport we want to see at MS 890. It’s a sport that does not need much to get started (just a soccer ball) but offers so many benefits. Soccer is easy but hardcore at the same time because you have to be physically fit and have the stamina.
If you put in the time, effort, and do everything that you possibly could do as an 11-year-old and up to 8th grade, you work out, you go to try out, you go to the practices, you do the games, you're on the field. Even if you're a substitute, if you go to the practices, you become strong, and you actually pick up on some skills. Even if you're so-so, then when you go to high school and improve your game, you can maybe get a scholarship to go to a good college because of the fact that you are good at soccer and you persisted and practiced for many years. Soccer is one of the most popular sports in America.
Here are some solutions to this issue at MS890. For all these clubs that I just mentioned, your grades must be a 70 and up. If you have anything under a failing grade, which is 65 you need to get your grades up before you can join. So therefore, if you want to stay in these clubs, you need your grades to be over 70 or up for all your classes. Spark, Studio—everything included. You have to pick a sport and stick with it, not everyone who tries out will get into the team. This is the only way to have a competitive school team that can go against other teams.
These are my suggestions for school sports. I really hope that people listen and we are able to bring athletic teams for our students. In conclusion, adding basketball, badminton, and soccer clubs would be great for us because they improve our health, teamwork, and discipline among students. Let’s rally together to make these options available at MS 890.
