Honoring Spanish Heirtage Month

By Samyra Chowdry and Sophia Andrade Galeano

To be Hispanic is to have pride, and this month celebrates it - September 15 to October 15. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage week under president Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th.” It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of public law. Hispanic Heritage month was created because it is the anniversary of the Independence of Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Till this day, Hispanic Heritage is still celebrated.

The event that all students have been  waiting for… never had happened. Although, in their advisories, students had been given conchas (a seashell mexican pastry) and they had played spanish music on the announcement speaker. Below are the students and teachers who show pride for their hispanic heritage.

We have interviewed students about their views and hopes for the Hispanic Heritage  celebration below:

Estefani De Jesus replies: “A hispanic tradition that I celebrate is Dia De Los Muertos to honor and remember my ancestors who have passed before me.”

Chelsea Perez answers “ I would love to hear music that i can dance to (Salsa,Merengue,Bachata,Cumbia she says) I would also like if fellow Hispanic students bring horchata, agua frescas, empanadas, tacos del pastor and pupusas.
